IWETHEY++
So I lost my last consulting gig December 23rd. Merry Christmas, your time here is finished.
Since then (they actually gave me a full two weeks' notice, so there's not a really bad taste in my mouth), I've been looking for a new gig.
Today, I was offered a job in my hometown of Naperville, IL. The commute to work is from my bedroom to my computer room. And on the one or two days a week that I have to go into the office, it's 20 minutes (for those familiar with the area, basically IL Rte 59 and Diehl Road.)
The job sounds like a good one -- hit the ground running doing Java and JSP stuff, with Oracle as the back-end.
Overall, I'm very pleased. I got 6 weeks of vacation to start the year, and I'm all refreshed and ready to go. Plus, you can't beat the new commute. :)
I start next Wednesday.

Very nice
Make sure there is some ritual that you perform to separate work from home activity, or you will ALWAYS be at work.

Mike was doing the "work/home" seperation thing
At the old gig... a few days a week.
Plus, it is quite a demarc from the rest of the house. That is if it is still the same room I saw.

Yep, still the same room...
...The problem will lie in keeping the kids out of the computer room when they get home from school while I'm still working. Though, as you've mentioned elsewhere, I was doing that already at my last consulting gig, and the same rules were in effect.
Then again, there's always the chance (after a few weeks of good performance) that I can split my workday up...Who knows how it'll all work out.

Glad to hear it! One question, though
May I ask if it is telecommuting, what keeps them from offshoring it?
I had the O-word bite me just the other day. I was a top contentor for one position where a lady was pregnant and decided to call it quits, but I was later told they decided to offshore it instead of replace her. The immediate supervisor was against it because systems required a lot of last-minute changes, but was overridden by higher-ups.

Company culture, I suspect.
Small company (guessing 10-15 people total) that sells to US companies only. They've got an employee somewhere in Spain, but he used to work locally and decided to move back to his home country.
They like having people show up in the office once or twice a week for brainstorming sessions, but don't feel the need to be Big Brother to other adults.
Heading off the next question...How do they know if you're doing your job or not? Lots of processing of the programming problem on the front-end, which breaks the problem down into small chunks of deliverables which are due no more than a week out.
