Turkey Report
At my brother's house, 1 minute from mine.
His wife LOVES to cook. Why? I dunno. Kind of like VB programmers who LOVE to code. They can't be any good, because if they were, they'd be smart enough to use a different language.
Bacon wrapped around fake crab sticks as an appetizer. Bacon was almost raw.
Gravy straight from a can.
Stuffing was probably Stove Top, but not wet enough, so the croutons were hard, and something fishy was mixed in.
The cranberry sauce was the "real" stuff, which means twigs.
The string beans has no seasoning, except she did saute some almonds in butter. 2 points for effort there.
The turkey was "ok", at least from the perspective that it wasn't raw and wasn't too dry, but that's the best you can say. No crispy skin, no seasoning.
The best part was the apple crumb pie we brought.
My wife's brother is visiting so he came with. His job is to organize conferences of associations, which means he travels the world on free vacations while master chefs and hotel owners kiss his ass in an attempt to have him bring the conferences. He was as nice and gracious as humanly possibly, downing the raw bacon, while I made faces across the table from him.
This was anticipated. My wife made a turkey, stuffing, and gravy last night. I had all the crispy skin, and made grieven from the rest, and ate 2 real turkey sandwiches already today.
And yours?

Ignorance attack: What's grieven?
Apart form what you do after goin' to a funeral?
Love the VB comment too... guilty as charged, your honour. (I had no choice!)

Re: Ignorance attack: What's grieven?
Grieven is chicken or turkey skin, slowly fried in it's own grease, kind of like bacon, until nothing is left except crisp fat with a coating of crisp skin.
Think pork rinds, yet make from chicken or turkey. When done, the texture starts as crispy yet melts in your mouth.
It's incredible when done right.

Sounds... healthy! :)
Might see if I can give that a go at Christmas, which is usually the one time a year we have turkey.

Oh that is too precious
I drove around looking for some place that was open and finally settled on Frisches. They didn't have a special turkey spread on the salad bar or breakfast bar or whatever they had when I sat down; I ordered a fish meal (which included the salad bar) instead.
Such was my Thanksgiving. My "real" Thanksgiving meal is going to be with my parents on Saturday, halfway between their apartment and where I live. Neither of us have to drive 5 hours, and we'll all probably gobble a lot.

Broom...dude...
...come over for left-overs, dude..although it seems you created them in advance of your trip to the brothers...
Cooking began Wed...with pies (cherry, apple, pumpkin and peach)...as well as broccoli-cheese casserole (an annual request) and sweet potato casserole. Wed ended the wifes duties.
Thursday AM began my duties...stuffing (from "scratch"...quotes because I don't make the bread cubes...they're bought), stuff the bird...get the bird in for its 5 hour stint, then peel potato (multiple) for mashed...green bean casserole (modified from the back of Frenches Fried Onions), corn, rolls...and heat the escarole soup brought by my mommy-in-law.
As with every time I cook this meal...by the time it hits the table my appetite has been curbed from hours of picking...so a modest plateful of food...clean up...then coffee and pies...
Oh, yeah, forgot the wine imbibed throuh the day...nice french white for me and Arbor Mist for the likers of flavors among the family.
Compliments were passed to both chefs at the end of another traditional Thanksgiving day bonanza.
And today...the required turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce sandwich...chased with more freakin pie (before we donate the rest to the neighborhood kids)
Oh...we have enough left that I packaged a dinner for 4 to go with my mother in law and we will have it again Saturday or Sunday.
You were born...and so you're free...so Happy Birthday! Laurie Anderson

Managed to avoid turkey all-together
The wife and I saved our pennies and drove down to the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs for two nights of shameless pampering and world-class dining.
..plus lots and lots of sleep...mmmm...sleep......
No phone. No e-mail. No voice-mail. No fax. No laptop. No pager. No cellphone. No newspaper. No TV. (Not that they weren't available, we just made a conscious effort to avoid them.)

Mine was tastier...
My sister likes cooking. Kind of like how some people like programming Perl? A little unconventional but effective.
Traditional thanksgiving with multiple family members in the country. My wife and I meant to go back the next morning, but in the food stupor we just sat around, pretended to play pool, chatted, continued to eat leftovers, and then stayed over. The next day they got us to ride bikes, rake leaves, and generally energized us so that we finally headed out Sat night.
It was fun and I'm happy. :-)
Cheers, Ben

Speaking of raking
I just spent 2 hours using an electric leaf blower.
My hands are not quite pins and needles, but some wierd variation that causes them to feel like a spring vibrating every time they get tapped. Typing is an adventure.
I wonder how long this will last.

Finale to my turkey report
My family (parents, 2 sisters, their husbands, and an uncle) showed up at a place called Grey's Cafeteria in Indianapolis.
NO TURKEY!? This place had liver, chicken, beef, but, unbelievably (at least to me), no turkey. Well, okay, I took corn, mashed potatos, and chicken. Halfway through the meal I started feeling wretched, and as I finished I was visibly shaking. (I first was blaming this on the stress of fighting winds as I made the two hour drive, but eventually I had to admit it must have been something else/more.) I don't know if it was the food or some other bug, but the drive home in the rain was quite the adventure; more than once I thought about just stopping at a motel and crashing for the day.
It gets better. Make it home I did, to find out my hot water heater seems to be on the blink. Arrrrrrrr.

Next time try
The fairly famous one (whose name natch I don't recall) in Bloomington - maybe even closer depending on yer family's vectors.
A slice of '50s, including decor - which is at least authentic. I was smitten by the overall quality of the food and recipes, generous servings and friendly folk serving. When I was regularly visiting friend at IU - made it a point to go there at least every few days. (Their fish was better than many presentations of fancy re$taurants everywhere). Old-fashioned American integrity as is now honored mostly by absence, and the death-march of Corp chains.
I'll bet They had ^%#$%@ Turkey!

You'll hate me...
Went to my wife's mom's place for Thanksgiving. I'll say this, her mom knows How To Cook.
First off, we had a Turkey. A GOOOOOOOOD turkey. Mmmmmmmm... Stuffin' too.
Then on to all the "traditional" trappings that come with a Filipino thanksgiving - lumpia (spring rolls), adobo, langanisa, sutanong, and about six other dishes I can't pronounce, along with king crab and dungeoness crab, and some smoked salmon.
Man, oh man, did I make out with the leftovers. I shouldn't have to cook for the rest of the WEEK!

Turkey? What turkey?
After all, everybody knows that Thanksgiving is in October.

And during Warpstock at that
If I hadn't been up there for it, I'd never have known that Canada had Thanksgiving, let alone that it was in October.
Guess it makes sense to have it early, gets colder sooner up there, thus an earlier harvest :-)
Got my aunt over the holidays - we were calling my parents(currently residing in Mexico) and talking about how my dad did not have the day off because it wasn't Thanksgiving. She said "that's right, they don't have a 4th of July either", to which I replied "Sure they do". She looked rather puzzled until I followed up with "it's right after the 3rd of July".

That's what you get for not giving it a proper name.
Or at least persistently referring to it by its calender date instead of the name it does have. :-)

I've always heard it both ways
4th of July and Independence Day are pretty much synonymous to me, though I suspect the date is used more frequently.
