"Local" candidates have so many people to deal with that actually showing up in person at a significant fraction of the doorsteps is impossible. It is also likely to be unhealthy... Meeting the vast majority of the people in your riding makes it viscerally more difficult to sell them out, imho. Seriously, some of the districts are so badly gerrymandered, that they extend over several hundred linear miles. (I'm stll waiting for Tejas to have the first discontinuous congressional district.) I'm not talking about seeing them in one day; it takes months for a candidate up here to get to most of his prospective constituents. However, it's still what you need to do if you want to win. The problem isn't the transportation it seems, it's the number of people.
