Welcome to IWETHEY!

New It's bad with the local elections here.
We do get a fair number of candidate ads here, but not as many as you'd think in a supposed swing state. OTOH, my mail has become absolutely innundated with political ads, mainly attack pieces by the GOP against Democratic candidates. I think the mass of GOP mailings I recieve actually has exceeded the combined mass of all the rest of my mail, including the junk mail.

This is scary.
All I want for my birthday is a new President!
New Oh yeah, I forgot actual mail
We are getting a lot of mail ads, but we mostly glance at them and pitch them. And the commercials on the TV are local too, it's not all national.

Ah well, in 6 more days it will be gone. :)

New Ha!
New **chuckle**
They're in season now...no limit, AFAIK....

New They do up here too
In fact, they do in pretty much every election I've been around for, no matter where I've lived (Montreal, Laval, and Kingston).

It's how you win elections up here. There's a famous quote from (IIRC) Laurier: "An election is won on the doorstep". It's still true.

New I was surprised though
Probably because my standard for comparison is NYC. "Local" candidates have so many people to deal with that actually showing up in person at a significant fraction of the doorsteps is impossible. It is also likely to be unhealthy...

Cheers,
Ben

New That's too bad
Your ridings are too large to be able to be effectively democratic if it's not possible for the candidate to be able to meet and know most of the people in his riding/district/whatever.

Meeting the vast majority of the people in your riding makes it viscerally more difficult to sell them out, imho. I'm not saying impossible, but certainly harder.

New Have you SEEN the average american district?
Gerrymandering...it's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!

Seriously, some of the districts are so badly gerrymandered, that they extend over several hundred linear miles. (I'm stll waiting for Tejas to have the first discontinuous congressional district.) And then there are states like Nothr Dakota or Montana, where the entire state gets a single Congresscritter. and Montana is HUGE!

BULLSHIT

New Might be time to consider adding more of them.
Edit: pushed it too soon.

A few hundred linear miles is no big deal. I'm not talking about seeing them in one day; it takes months for a candidate up here to get to most of his prospective constituents. However, it's still what you need to do if you want to win. The problem isn't the transportation it seems, it's the number of people.

It's still part of the job; if you want to be a politician and represent people, it's a good idea to have met them so you can get a feel for what they want... and let them get a feel for you.

New Gad! So how many congresscritters...
...do you want skulking around Washington DC? Just what we need, more self-important pompous asses strutting around like so many bantam roosters, carving out perks for themselves (e.g. flu shots) while purporting to "represent" "us".

No fucking thankyouverymuch!

New I'd say a reasonable ratio would probably be
about one per 60-100K people.

New More is better
That way we know where to find them when the Revolution comes. ;-)

Cheers,
Ben

New Yeah, but then...
...we need more ammo to make sure we get them all.

Raises the cost of the revolution, doncha think?

New Imagine your surprise...
When you discover *I* am working in the industry that sends those mailings out.

Starting this past Monday we have 400 political mailings to do. Most ~ 10,000 piece about 50 have 100,000 plus. All to be DONE ASAP. Some are designed to be gotten ON Monday.

You mentioned it in [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=177621|http://z.iwethey.org...?contentid=177621]. :-P
