Unbelievable
I just got back from visiting my mother in Ohio (the most contested state in the upcoming election). See, I live in Indiana and it's a foregone conclusion that Bush will win this state. People living in New York and California have the same luxury. Anyway, every single break in both radio and television contained at least one attack add from either the Bush camp, the Kerry camp, Democrats who accuse Bush of being a child molestor, wolves against Kerry, etc...
Man, I almost threw my shoe through the TV. After about 5 hours of abuse, I turned off, tuned out and dropped out. It was rough not being able to watch television or listen to the radio for 4 days.
Now that both parties of assclowns have got the poor people of this state so paranoid and polarized - what the hell is either party going to do after the election to calm these folks down. I mean, after the holocaust of either candidate winning on November 2, these people will have to go about their lives, albeit broken by the lack of decent jobs and cowering under the threat of a terrorist strike at any moment on Fountain Square. If I lived there, I would sue the shit out of both political parties for cruelty and abuse. No kidding.
People, I have now personally witnessed the end of democracy in America. It's just noise and disinformation on a mass scale. It ain't pretty. Go to Ohio and see it in microcosm for yourself.
Did I mention, I hate election years,
P.S. Can't wait for next week at this time no matter who "wins" (we, the people won't - that's a given) when we can forget all this political bs and go back to hating eachother for more compelling reasons.
Just a fe, well... whatever Danno

Hey MFAC...
Your comment: cowering under the threat of a terrorist strike at any moment on Fountain Square Makes me think you have "seen" seen [link|http://www.teamamerica.com/|TEAM AMERICA: World Police]! If haven't, go see it the first time you can, on the big screen, DVD widescreen won't do it justice. And your ribs won't survive either. One thing, Bill Pope was the Directory of Photography, he also did the Matrix Series... precious experience from the Matrix was used in making this a fantasic marvel to behold. Remember: Team America is putting the *F* back in Freedom.

Unbelievable? I'd say so
I live in Ohio. I haven't turned the TV on a non-cable channel in weeks. You watched 5 hours of that shit? There is something seriously wrong with you, boy... The concentration of bullshit that is being spread in Ohio has nothing to do with the end of democracy. We are just a little removed from Appalachia (the hicks that TAFKAB wants to emulate) and it takes a little longer for the political information to sink through the inbred idiocy and alcholism. On the other paw, if you meant that nobody with a chance of winning has said anything that was worth a nanosecond of anybody's time, you probably have a point.

Re: Unbelievable? I'd say so
On the other other paw, I would like to say in response to: "On the other paw, if you meant that nobody with a chance of winning has said anything that was worth a nanosecond of anybody's time, you probably have a point."
Not quite accurate, my concerned (and perhaps already polarized) buckeye, for you see; one of the two no talent lying disingenous monkey fuck ass clowns is going to win... It's guaranteed, it's either Yale or Yale this time. I can't say that I could diffentiate the sacks of steaming manure produced from either party as being worth a nanosecond of anyone's time. I find it all offensive as hell and feel sorry for the poor appalachian-americans who are being subjected to it. I think you and your brother and sister Ohio'ns (Ohion's?) should be reimbursed by both parties for the abuse they have been put through...
In any case, thank Dog Tuesday is less than a week away.

Agree about the candidates
but reimbursements? Anybody too stupid to turn off a television deserves what they get. Certainly no sympathy. You are alloed to step over a dog turd. Wallowing is not necessary.

I live in Missouri
And they are running ads for both parties all the time in between music on the radio and shows on TV. Personally, I just ignore them, or if they are really obnoxious, I hit the mute button till my show comes back on. :)

I live in Michigan...
... and the damn phone has been ringing off the hook with those infuriating automated phone spams.
"Bush eats children! And doesn't brush his teeth afterwards!" "Kerry rapes children! And doesn't brush their teeth afterwards!"
Bleh. Michigan isn't even really up for grabs any more. I can only imagine what it's like in Ohio or Florida.

That's what I've found odd
No phone call solicitations about political stuff, and almost no door-to-door solicitation either. Now and again we have a flyer on the front door, but no one is bothering us. Which is actually nice. :)

Florida is bad...
lots and lots of commericals.
But the national news is only part of the picture. We're got Senator Graham's seat open also...and Castor and Martinez are going for that seat full-throttle. Martinez has ads of Castor back when she worked for the University giving leave to some terrorist professor. Castor shows commericals of the same terrorist professor meeting Dubya.
Shrug.

It's bad with the local elections here.
We do get a fair number of candidate ads here, but not as many as you'd think in a supposed swing state. OTOH, my mail has become absolutely innundated with political ads, mainly attack pieces by the GOP against Democratic candidates. I think the mass of GOP mailings I recieve actually has exceeded the combined mass of all the rest of my mail, including the junk mail.
This is scary.

Oh yeah, I forgot actual mail
We are getting a lot of mail ads, but we mostly glance at them and pitch them. And the commercials on the TV are local too, it's not all national.
Ah well, in 6 more days it will be gone. :)

They do up here too
In fact, they do in pretty much every election I've been around for, no matter where I've lived (Montreal, Laval, and Kingston).
It's how you win elections up here. There's a famous quote from (IIRC) Laurier: "An election is won on the doorstep". It's still true.

I was surprised though
Probably because my standard for comparison is NYC. "Local" candidates have so many people to deal with that actually showing up in person at a significant fraction of the doorsteps is impossible. It is also likely to be unhealthy...

That's too bad
Your ridings are too large to be able to be effectively democratic if it's not possible for the candidate to be able to meet and know most of the people in his riding/district/whatever.
Meeting the vast majority of the people in your riding makes it viscerally more difficult to sell them out, imho. I'm not saying impossible, but certainly harder.

Have you SEEN the average american district?
Gerrymandering...it's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!
Seriously, some of the districts are so badly gerrymandered, that they extend over several hundred linear miles. (I'm stll waiting for Tejas to have the first discontinuous congressional district.) And then there are states like Nothr Dakota or Montana, where the entire state gets a single Congresscritter. and Montana is HUGE!

Might be time to consider adding more of them.
Edit: pushed it too soon.
A few hundred linear miles is no big deal. I'm not talking about seeing them in one day; it takes months for a candidate up here to get to most of his prospective constituents. However, it's still what you need to do if you want to win. The problem isn't the transportation it seems, it's the number of people.
It's still part of the job; if you want to be a politician and represent people, it's a good idea to have met them so you can get a feel for what they want... and let them get a feel for you.

Gad! So how many congresscritters...
...do you want skulking around Washington DC? Just what we need, more self-important pompous asses strutting around like so many bantam roosters, carving out perks for themselves (e.g. flu shots) while purporting to "represent" "us".
No fucking thankyouverymuch!
