..was taken by Grant's troops in early 1862 and held for the remainder of the war. One of Columbia's citizens was Sam Watkins, who survived all the major actions in the West other than Vicksburg. He wrote a memoir - "Company H, a Sideshow of the Big Show". I have a hazy plan to convert this book into a screenplay called "White Trash".
