New The problem with Exchange...
...is that the users love it. Outlook sucks for email but it's not bad at managing contacts and diaries.

Public folders, shared calendaring, shared contact lists - it's all fab at the client end.

As I know and you know and Andrew is discovering, at the other end it's a complete bear. Has to run on Windows, 200x versions require AD, yadda yadda.

But there's nothing to touch it for a groupware solution. Not Groupwise, not Notes, not OGO. And that's A Problem.

New You ever use Groupwise with the...
Document library options, with web-publishing and so on...

Exchange doesn't even compare. If you had ever used GroupWise fully at versions later than 5.2 you would know this.

Groupwise is by far a better integrated system and far more expandable and scalable that cannot be compared to by Exchange.

New OK.
Not having used GroupWise serverside since 5.0, I can't speak to the current functionality.

I do know that the client STILL sucks all holy arse, though. Had to use it for a week (one of our offices is a NetWare/GroupWise shop) and it was painful. I've never been glad to go back to Outlook before or since. The only thing I've ever met that sucks more is the Notes client.

GroupWise always was nicer at the server end. But with a client like that...

Anyway, none of this helps Andrew. His client has Exchange 2003, and is almost certainly unwilling to junk that investment (it ain't cheap).

New You can use Lookout as a Groupwise client now.
So you can get the best of both worlds that way.

Nearly all functionality too. Indexed Text searching in the Doc-Lib doesn;t work right now and a few other nits like that.

Diary and Calendaring, resource scheduling etc... all works.

New Isn't there a server-side 'connector'
That allows Exchange to use a standard imap server for Outlook clients? IIRC (and I might be wrong) I stumbled over a project that does this when I was looking at the Ximian connector for evolution...
