Paris looking to switch to Linux
Oh gawd, I'd love to hear Michel Merlin on this one! [link|http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5158001.html|http://zdnet.com.com...04_2-5158001.html] Following Munich, Germany's decision to switch to Linux desktops, the French capital of Paris is studying a similar move.
Systems integrator Unilog is set to carry out a feasibility study on the installation of open-source software systems for the city of Paris, the company has said. On the strength of an earlier Unilog study, Munich agreed to migrate thousands of desktops from Windows to the open-source operating system Linux.
The three-month study will review the 17,000 Windows-based PCs used by the French capital's administration, including 400 servers and 600 applications, and it was awarded to Unilog as a direct result of the Munich study, the company said. In May of last year, Munich decided to equip 14,000 workstations with SuSE Linux-based systems, a move seen as a significant win for the open-source camp. Keep 'em coming :)

I think I'll put in with the Europeans.
Any advice CRC? Arkadiy? Peter? Giovanni? (Oh what heaven to work in Italy...)

bp, Todd, and Mike Huber
All have experience working with the French.
Doesn't take too long to get a passport..just a few days if you're willing to pay the expediting fee.

If it's not worth $85 to you, forget it.

3 hours
If you're in a city (like Chicago) that has an expedited-passport facility and you're willing to spend more for the expedition of your passport ($60) than for the passport itself ($55).

If I got a position in Europe, I'd fly up to do it. We'd get royal in the interim.

Re: How long does it take to get a passport?
The cost of living is much higher over here, taxes are vastly higher, and as a non-citizen, you might not be able to benefit from the services for which you are paying.

Yes but I can always go drown my sorrows in the Adriatic Sea :) Seriously I need very little money to live on. I need to be able to feel like a free man again instead of a death-row inmate.

Exchanged a couple e-mails with MM
eons ago.
Difficult to reconcile his antic performances at IW and on to EZboard, with some of his posts elsewhere. While he has/had a Blind spot re "the wondefulness of the folks at Beastware" - he has written some erudite (!) essays on lots of other things. He is well educated.
Which is why I long wondered if 'Our' version was a bot.. Ah well - ancient history.
(Only 'machines' that interest moi these days - run OS-X. What use is multiprocessor gigaMIPS on Beastware? Faster infection?)
