on X wheels:
Recently: [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=55383|Post #55383] == 130MPH [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=56079|Post #56079] == 140MPH
On 2 wheels: 180MPH in the desert on a Suzuki GSX-1100R. It had plenty to go... I backed down.
In High School: I had a 1976 Pinto with a 351C in it. Had to delay the opening of the secondaries as the rear wheels would automagically spin.
This Pinto with me in it went ~160MPH (well okay 159.8 in the traps) on an Police Sponsored Saturday Night Drags... 1/2 Mile. They didn;t expect such horsepower to be wielded by 16-19 year olds. We had to pass an inspection, plus we had to have GOOD straps and a roll cage if it rolling dyno'd ~400HP or above.
It was a ploy to get cars off the road that didn't have proper equipment for road driving. Well they got a few, but had to inspect over 300 cars...
I sold that car shortly after that, it was in an accident, guy drove it ~ 180MPH on slow rolling hills as RAMPS. He turned in air and rolled it... wasn't wearing harnesses in the car... got flipped out and rolled over. Sadly he was killed.

Speed.... Yep, an addicting thing. Hard to break from it. Though those outrageous insurance premiums tend to at least slow the uptake a bit.

180 *Suzuki* ?
Hmmm, haven't kept up with the latest Over-Kill crotch rocket specs - but would be surprised at a Suzuki equalling a Kawa ZX-13 (14 now?) with its actually functional 'Ram-Air' faux supercharging.. to approach 200 MPH + a few. That's also at least 1300 cc IIRC, and the most brute horsepower on an authentic bike. (You can't count V-8 trikes and other circus stuff that would roll into a ball with you at the center, if they tried anything requiring roadworthiness and a suspension).
ie. if that Suzuki actually made it to 180 in er warm desert air.. I simply can't believe there was [Reserve]. Sorry but - sounds like bench racing :-\ufffd ..now my Black Shadow with Lightning cams, magnesium brake-plates, titanium brake-beam support, R-rubber.. and Amal GP carbs: why It would - - - >
('Course Rollie Free, then in his '60s - made just over 150 mph at Bonneville ~ 1950: on a naked Vincent Black Lightning - he prone and in swim trunks... He did that last because, wearing leathers - the drag made a max of ~ 148ish. Heh.) If he'd had a fairing . . . That record for gas, standard machines stood for a loong time [too lazy to look up How long]. 55\ufffd 1000 cc vee: ours would eat Triumphs in 3rd; shift to 4th as you go by {hee hee}
Physics hasn't changed -- Wait!! -- maybe it Has, if Ross didn't eviscerate an Eigenfunction or confuse a dell X dell with.. that smarmy Texas greed-boy ;-)
Gotta laugh at the modrin $Hog$ and their CPA-riders on $22K two wheel trucks, incapable of anything like cornering. Gawd we're a weird kultur, ever preferring the massive and the garish Symbol over anything like intelligent engineering for decent handling. What 'we' 'Are' is ~

PS on this hot topic..
My friend Art Petersen owned an SSK-L Mercedes ('30s) - his therapy was to go out on a Sunday morning in this Hitler era ancient lookin thang.. eventually someone would choose him off {heh heh glorp}
He'd just track them up to max, on their tail, then (manually - you could Do that on those cars) kick in the supercharger and disappear ... It'd be BS from anyone but mild mannered (bloody technosavvy) Art P. The Merc wasn't around when I knew him, but saw pics of the Auburn Speedster boat-tail he had spent 22,000 [documented by logs] Hours restoring to perfection.. Another era, that.
Ever drive a 300-SL gullwing?

Friend has FZR1000...
...which has 180MPH on the clock, and he reckons it's capable of it, too. He's an experienced rider on big bikes, so I tend to trust his opinion.

No question
My FJ1200 says 180, but with massive me up, 160 is more likely tops. I've done 140 easily and backed off.

OK, guess my lore is now obsolete -
We can all run the approx #s though, for a given frontal area and its shape, and see just how much %-HP increase to go from a mere 150 - 180 [!! - seems surreal, that].
Academic for moi; reaction-time and prolly G-sensor in middle-ear - out of calibration. But then, straight line.. who needs sensors. So if I get the chance.
Finally, when dream-designing (where the power unit emulates a steam engine with max torque at 0-rpm): I still believe that for humans: lighter is Better all around. Became such a believer when borrowing a friend's ~ 280# Velocette IIRC. Imagining if it had the torque of the Vin vee, etc. Fershure it's right as the curves become tighter and more varied; you can then use your own weight (greater %-total) to manhandle through difficulties. 500# is just an inherent handicap, something I verify from simple experience. Even the ~420# KZ-550, with near the HP of a Shadow, but nothing like the torque -- IS too heavy.
Guess I'm a bit surprised that this principle (if it is one) or at least the aim to test it - hasn't produced some light machines with ~ power/wt of the monsters. Problem always Is the nature of this ancient engine design, now pushed to maximize selling-hype for mere HP. 10,000 RPM is no place to have to go for that power. TORQUE is what you always want, and with enough power to approach traction limit.
Oh well.. some future power source shall eventually achieve this, with feedback control of the torque response One Likes. Yup - it'll still be the most fun you can have except the obv.
Ashton satisfied enough - but there's always Better. Until escape velocity is at your twist-grip ;) the flying cycle, in low earth orbit. 3-D At Last

Re: OK, guess my lore is now obsolete -
Yes indeed, torque is what you want! The FJ1200 is topped only by the show-off, unstable, unrideable V-Max in torque, even among modern bikes. It has to be experienced to be believed. That is why is has such a loyal following - a classic known only to serious riders.
The 130hp engine is still in production and is used in some off-formula road course racers. We call it "the lump". It makes "agricultural noises" at idle, growls through 3k, evens out at 4k, and sings like a bird above 5k. The note and power are so sweet that you tend to keep it in 4th with the revs jacked, and only go to 5th for lazy cruises.

Unmodded bike speeds
Suzuki GSX1300R: 191 mph Kawi ZX12: 188 mph
Kawi, Honda and Suzuki got into a shoot-out for the top-speed crown for a couple of years. Honda got nowhere; Suzuki stunned everyone by topping the previous record of the ZX11 by 15mph. Kawi's return was short-circuited when politicians started making noises that "the public" had no business running around on 200mph bikes.
FWIW, 180 mph on a GSX-R 1100 is a tad hard to believe. Early models reached 145 mph, more recent editions about 165. The new 1000 does clip 180.

Was wondering when this was going to be asked
I bought it brand new...
I then spent ~$4K additional on the motor, porting, manifold tuning and re-gearing the transmission and sprocket change. Oh a seriously upgraded fuek system.
Had more gears... and fewer rear sprocket teeth for a better sprocket ratio.
I spent another $1K on the tires about 4 weeks later.
180 MPH, was not even in the highest gear @ ~15,000 RPM.
It was completely ridable.

Heh.. sorry, I Shoulda Known
I Forgot that anything that moves or makes pulses - is apt to remain stock for about as long as you take to complete the shopping list ;-) Greg, yer a Crank!
(Guess I gotta find a couple old links - re the twin-Lightning s/charged land speed record design (cigar shaped)). I saw pix of the meticulous workmanship ~ 3? years ago. It was definitely aircraft quality assembly and with many clever approaches to fitting the bits & pieces to achieve a decent CG and also polar moment.
Some old cycle buddies I recognized in the list - had donated pieces from precious stock of original factory bits, including at least one bit I'm sure I once had.. 'Vibrac' steel polished rods and forged cranks, the usual expensive-metal upgrades etc.
Now I gotta look it up, though I think I'd have heard if it made the mark -- you follow any of this Record stuff? Ugh; "Big Sid's" site at duke.edu seems to have disappeared. It had a lot of links du jour. [link|http://www.dropbears.com/m/models/classic/vinad53.htm| Google] [link|http://www.allenmuseum.com/shadow.htm| time]. I guess. It'd be Fun for a kinda-Vincent to eclipse all the Corp guys, natch.

Looks like I'm wrong again!
I specifically refuse to unstock my FJ. I like stock. I know it will work as intended.

Re: Unmodded bike speeds
Pretty sure the Honda CBR1000 can do 180. But I've got it beat below 120 :)
