Question on this:

Ok, the comment above is fair enough. But, what if one were a
beginner? Is vi(m) appropriate or overwhelming? Which editor
would be good for a noob?
(Trying to be quotable...) It is an unfortunate truth that vi requires some persistence to learn. Pair programming makes this easier, incidentally, as does the desire to "do tricks" with it that you may see a vi-expert do. Fortunately, Vim specifically makes learning it easier in two ways: it knows about cursor keys, which makes the learning curve a bit easier, plus it has a tutorial called vimtutor which teaches you the basics. ]
I personally found that vi was easiest to learn when it was the most capable editor available. It was on a university box where the alternative was ed (line editing was done with regexps!).
Also, do you want to be quoted in print? If so, got title/company?
I will have to check. We're only a small company, so titles are somewhat indistinct.
