Hughes was fired by station manager Art Timko. "Art said he was 'tired of the fight,' trying to get me to run news on the show and not have an opinion," Hughes said. Last time I checked, you were using it to mean anyone who called you a jackbooted totalitarian. I'm unable to find any reference to you, or to jackboots, in the referenced story. So won't you please tell us what you intend to convey when you call someone a "stalinist" in your posts? Now our own mmoffit is a communist first class but he is a thinking man not a cult member and thereofore worth listenening to. I assume that you spelled "yes" "the" "spelling" "is" and "deliberate" as you did of set purpose as well. Stalinism, maoism, Kim Illism and bob jonesism are (to me and probably me only) equivelant (cough) Fair enough, especially the "to me and probably me only" part, although cults of personality were around long before Uncle Joe was even a bead of sweat on Papa Djugashvili's forehead. I just love innuendo.. Must be a different NPR in your area - not enough Calle Ocho Cubans on to meet yer comfort level? Funny thing on mine; I hear the arguments for getting Bad Saddam, mixed in with reports from The Front yada yada. (I will agree that - I haven't hear a single essay expressing abject admiration for the Statesmanship of the Admin, and sighing relief at how close we came to being nuked by Saddam! - if Dubya hadn't rushed to piss in everybody's soup so as to Save Us In Time. Yup, Must all be in lockstep alright..) Of course too - as you are immune to the siren call of any of the crowds, impervious to cant and are Your Own Man\ufffd -- why obviously any wimp on NPR / or listening to same -- couldn't possibly meet that standard, prima facie ;-) Let's see.. Around here NPR informs me that white people cannot understand geopolitics because the rest of the world is not white except for europe who does understand because of large amounts of correctly colored immigration. Only jews may be deliberately discriminated against and Sammi Al Arian is a man who unjusly is being accused of assisting terrorists because they only attack jews and thats ok. As you say it is regional. I beleive in government funding for the arts without censoring what is acceptable because western civilization from the the greeks, to the industrial age has supported bad artists out of nobless oblige. Since here we have no monarchy that demands 10% and a church that demands 10% automatically deducted and both covered the poor as well as artists it is money well spent. Government money spent on entertainment should be given equally. If the show pulls listenership it should be allowed to go on no matter what agonizing horrors the camp followers go thru when a dissenting DJ is heard in public. Besides, you haven't been doing your homework - the amount paid by "The Government", about a postage stamp a year per capita; maybe even less by now - is hardly even 14% of the budget. Newt's long-term defunding ploy has pretty much worked.. and will hardly be noticed, given the digital attention span. As a result, Archer-Daniels-Midland and others are getting their smarmy messages on as 'sponsors', more and more often. When Murica has a "non-commercial public network" - it will be the most commercial non-commercial network ever devised. (As was noted years ago: when Murica builds a small car - it'll be the biggest, heaviest least economical small car ever.) KPFA-FM, OTOH launched its "listener sponsored" station in early '50s. No govt. support at all. Not many others around elsewhere, I note. We like 'free' stuff. Given that about 1/7 of PBS listeners support with $ and the rest freeload, it's pretty clear that Muricans generally, have no idea what TANSTAAFL means anyway - along with all the other things not known. So no need to worry pretty little head that there will actually be more than a token alternative to the homogenized -fotainment. Except on the web - til we start seeing various ISP Ashcroft Security rules, with PATRIOT-II. Nope, nothing to worry about - your preference for a series of wars will be +positively+ 'covered' - it's 'embedded', one might say. Hmmm - maybe it will be handiest for him to just shut down PBS "funding". But then - with the pittance of 14% yanked: it will survive anyway, till physically trashed by the Home Guard. Ashton

I'll assume that when you say "NPR" you are referring specifically to local programming on your NPR affiliate station, rather than anything from the mothership in DC (a charmingly undistinguished, slightly shabby building they bought or leased used, by the way--I was encouraged to see that NPR had the sense not to commission a palace), since I've been following the national programming for about a quarter of a century now without hearing anything resembling your lampoon.
