Network share disk utilization / free?
OK, so we've got scads of data we're slinging around a Win2K fileshare network here. \r\n\r\n Question: HTF do I know how much free space I've got on my network shares? Best option I've come up to date is dd. As in: dd if=/dev/zero of='\\server\\share\\foo' bs=$(( 1024*1024 )) and count how many MB I can cram into it. Not very efficient. \r\n\r\n Windows Explorer properties don't provide this information. Cygwin's 'df' can't dig it out. Our best indicator is pretty much just plain running out of space. There's gottabeabetterway....

Iffn you got a linux box...
...smbmount 'em and hit up "df".
Alternatively map a drive to them, and then you'll see the free space.

Silly solution...
Try a "dir" in a directory in the share.
The info at the bottom includes free space.
I have never looked into how you get to that directly...

Re: Silly solution...
...that won't work.
You can't specify UNC paths in a CMD.EXE window.
Suck, eh?

How'd you do it?

Thankee.
Marvellous consistency of operation. I love CMD.EXE, I really do.

It's perfectly understandable
CMD calls parts of Win32 for some things, one of which is a directory listing. You need a drive letter to set a current directory, which by definition requires a drive letter context (for back compatibility with older console programs).
You can always do a rundll32.exe from the command line get to pretty much anything in Win32.
CMD.EXE is stupid because it has to be stupid in places to be compatible.

Re: Silly solution...
Yeah, suck, but not because Windows suck - CMD.EXE and COMMAND.COM suck.
You can get UNIX for Windows with a nice Korn shell. You can then compile bash for it if you want.
If you want Windows and UNIX to live together, then make it easy on yourself and UNIXize the Windows box.

Re: Network share disk utilization / free?
If UNIX activity on Windows volumes is critical, then make them look good to UNIX with a Windows NFS solution.
