New 1. Be prepared to spend money.
Nero Burning ROM is highly recommended. Pick up a proper retail version; OEM copies are often modified to work only with particular models of burners.

Once upon a time I would have recommended Adaptec Easy CD Creator, but the version I have is not current anymore. It also requires IE...

New Roxio appears to have bought out Adaptec, since V4
Though Adaptec EZ CD Creator 4 seems just as ept - IF one's older CD/RW is on the list (of the full or OEM version).

Believe that Roxio had a number of glitches, necessitating fixes beyond 5.1 - and there were rumours of both M$ Media Player and Real Player versions of recent vintage nuking a Roxio install. Possibly some 5.x version now has corrected that.

Point - EZ V4 didn't require IE, and Roxio V 5.0x doesn't. I'm using Roxio and Moz 1.01 w/ no interaction discernible. (And I don't play with Real or M$ players any more, as they appear to have both become vehicles for spy- and crash- ware; some new mini-monopoly battle before our very eyes.)

The "floppy on an open CD" ap works fine ('Direct CD').

FWIW,

New Thanks.
Yes, I meant to mention some or most of that, but posted quite before I did. Just a point... The box for the last version of EasyCD Creator by Adaptec stated that IE was required, though quite why they needed to add that when it was for Windows 98 I really don't know. It was at that point I wasn't sure I trusted said package anymore.

Also, Karsten, there's another package an ex-colleague of mine loved called CDRWin by [link|http://www.goldenhawk.com/|GoldenHawk Technology] which is also generally well regarded. A free demo is available; but payment is expected in the end.

New Roxio was an Adaptec spinoff
Adaptec spun off their CD creation software during the hight of the .com boom to make Roxio. It was easy money until reality set in for the stock market.

New Nero
You can get a trial of Nero at [link|http://www.nero.com/|http://www.nero.com/] and if you like it, you can register it online and pay the money. If you ask me, it is easy to use, and runs smoothly, and well worth the cost to buy. You'll then pay $49 for the serial number, instead of $69 for the CD-ROM Plus a Serial Number.

As of this writing Nero V 5.5 is the latest and greatest.

New Just bought a CD/RW for $9.95 (after &*%*% rebates) w/Nero
no doubt the gutted OEM version. So I may soon have an opportunity to see if:

Nero can come even close to the packet-write simplicity of the Adaptec DirectCD ap, trouble-free world's cheapest floppy which allows the drudgery of backing-up All mail-files, b/mark lists yada in about 5 min. For about 3\ufffd. Not even worth hassle of 'New Only' and father-son rotations and ...

(Damn I miss Doze 3.1 where one .BAT file could do it all, and via the magic switches on pkzip; I mean - Do It All: the entire HD - ready to move to a {ugh} Zip disk or another HD. So simple that a newbie actually Did This regularly and once: had to restore all. It worked. Of course That level took a whole 15 minutes or more, to get the one .zip file to be moved.)

The final nail in the coffin of the terminally slothful majority: It's Too Much Trouble! So I Don't Please Help Me I NEED that File Sorry You Rebooted . . .

Win 9.x + later - where 'backup' is an esoteric art, subject to idiosyncratic failure before, during and after - for 90% of 'users'.
