"Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51: Support for the mouse wheel is provided through a separately-running module, MSWheel, that generates a MSH_MOUSEWHEEL message. The MSWheel module, which consists of MSWheel.exe and MSWheel.dll, is installed with the IntelliPoint software that is shipped with the IntelliMouse\ufffd pointing device. In addition, MSH_MOUSEWHEEL is defined in the header file (ZMouse.h) that an application must use to implement support for the wheel via the MSWheel module."

I'd take the advice of the other(s) here and try installing that IntelliMouse SW.
I'd imagine the pan mode works because that is just a middle mouse button press.

If that doesn't do it then a couple of Q's are in order:

- Did the old mouse have a wheel?
- If so, did it work?
- Is your laptop running Windows 95?

New MSWheel obsolete?
(* Support for the mouse wheel is provided through a separately-running module, MSWheel, that generates a MSH_MOUSEWHEEL message. *)

My understanding from reading the MS knowledge-maze is that MSWheel has been superseeded by a single driver called something like MSMouse32.dll.

I downloaded the latest software for that mouse model (MS), but the installation did *nothing*. It starts and then nothing happens. Black-hole EXE. (I was using the CD driver that came with it before.)

I don't know if that other link is the same thing.

I reloaded a very old driver from the old non-MS mouse, and it so far appears to work, but seems to lock up the machine about twice a day. But I have not verified that because it is hard to know what locks up Winblows.

I will see if the pattern points toward the mouse, and maybe try that other driver link if the old one is too problematic.

BTW, the laptop is ME.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Gawd, WinME can be tempermental anyway. On some computers it works great, on some it just makes you tear your hair out.

You *might* also try substituting a similar mouse just to make sure it isn't a cable/hardware problem.

(* You *might* also try substituting a similar mouse just to make sure it isn't a cable/hardware problem. *)

The mouse works fine on the laptop. However, I guess it would not hurt to reverse swap test (or double-test). Sometimes hardware may be "HALF-broken" such that it works fine on one machine, but not another. Thus, just because the mouse works fine on the laptop does not necessarily mean it is a "good" mouse.

I just have to find another working rat now. Somewhere around here is one with bad buttons, but a working scroll wheel. My wife wants me to throw all that stuff away. "Why do you keep this stuff, it is junk!". "Well, darling, sometimes I need to do double-swap tests.", "I thought you said it was broken?", "Yes, but enough of it works for certain kinds of tests.", "That is ridiculous! Junk it now!", "Yes dear".
