New Blackberries, etc.
I'm being asked about utility of a Blackberry or similar, what are they called? "Portable personal communicator"? The need is access to email while on the road. The user is quite nontechnical. It Just Needs To Work. Aim is to have both personal and work accounts end up sent to the unit. I suspect the next request will be that responses be generated appropriate to the inbound address.

A strong appeal of the Blackberry is the keyboard -- the Palm's Graffiti really doesn't cut it here.

New The Blackberry will be...
...my next PDA.

It is easy...the keyboard is difficult but functional and everyone that I've seen using them gets asked the same 2 questions...Did you use a Palm before? and Would you go back?.

100% of the answers have been Yes and Not a chance.

The other thing to do would be to outfit the guy with the Palm keyboard. Less than $100 and you never need graffiti again. If its just email access...its 2 palm sized items to carry...one is the palm and the other is the folded kb.

New I'd compare the services. Hardware shouldn't be a factor.
I've got a Handspring Visor (Palm OS). I never use Grafitti. I punch in information using the software keyboard that comes with it.

The Treos from Handspring (GSM phone + PalmOS organizer) are out now and one version has a hardware keyboard.

AFAIK, the Blackberry only works with e-mail systems using Exchange (and maybe Notes). They seem expensive, to me, based on their capabilities. A USAToday story about it is [link|http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/ccarch/2002/05/08/baig.htm|here]. $499 + $40/month from VoiceStream.

I think it comes down to the service, coverage area, etc. Having a built-in keyboard shouldn't be an issue, IMO.

Cheers,
Scott.
