The Kurds are a religiously diverse people. Though most are nominally Muslim, Kurdish Islam is rather diverse, and to the mainstream Muslims they are mostly heretics and should be killed.
They are also an easily identifiable group for persecution, as they speak an Iranian rather than Arabic language. So yes, the Kurds will fight the Islamic State fiercely because to not do so would be to accept death and loss of their lands.
