New For Peter (and All): Best $100 to introduce a music genre?
An interesting thread at MarginalRevolution:

Enda asks:

Loyal MR reader and consumer of alternative/indie/rock music here. If someone asked me for a broad introduction to the best of the genre with a budget of $100, my personal recommendation would be to purchase Sgt Pepper (The Beatles), skip most of the next two decades, Doolittle (Pixies), OK Computer (Radiohead), Pinkerton (Weezer), Siamese Dream (Smashing Pumpkins), Loveless (My Bloody Valentine), Is This It (The Strokes), Songs for the Deaf (Queens of the Stone Age) and Funeral (Arcade Fire).I have a $100 budget for an introduction to classical music and an essentially blank canvas. Your recommendations?

It's mostly a Classical thread, but there is some pushback on the Rock stuff.

Reviving the old "music I'm liking at the moment" threads here would be nice. :-)

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who hasn't found much "new" stuff that he likes lately.)
New Think I'd have to make room
for Kings of Leon in there. Pretty good new stuff.

As for what I'm liking at the moment...I will be on a smoky bar music kick for a while as I wait for my Feb 4 show (xmas present) of Diana Krall.

As for the last disk tracked on my ipod....that was OMD - Crush.
Sure, understanding today's complex world of the future is a little like having bees live in your head. But...there they are.

Sgt Pepper? if one MUST listen to the bugs the white album is almost listenable.

New Hmm.
For electronica, I'd go for Oxygene and Equinoxe by Jean Michel Jarre. These were absolutely ground-breaking for their time, however Jarre seems to have forgotten why with his more recent concerts. Other people might recommend early Kraftwerk, but I haven't heard them.

My classical experience is a bit limited, by comparison, but I do know a few gems. Holst's The Planets is a worthwhile inclusion. Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries is good, but I'd be fussy about the orchestra (I have one that is only average). For classical crossover, I'd suggest Bond's first album (Born).

A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New on kraftwerk
Computerworld and if one must, autobahn also.

New There was a song
Makes me think of Ice Castles (song name) of the same time frame as Kraftwerks.

Beep: Any Idea?
New Non music aside: TV910
So this video shows a Televideo 910 terminal on the cover.

http://www.youtube.c...k&feature=related

My brother had several of these terminals in 1980, and I think he still has one in a shed. I learned Wordstar on CP/M on that terminal. We also used it with a 300 based acoustic coupler to talk to "online" (compuserve) at the time.

Piece of shit, but amazing at the time.

Think about how hard doing electronica was in those days.
New Creative electronica.
Oxygene has a picture of Jarre in amongst a mess of things: numerous analog synths and organs interconnected together with patch cables. (As an amateur synth programmer myself, I know that some of the iconic sounds on Equinoxe are very difficult to re-create with recent synth hardware, requiring modulation links often not provided.)

New oooohh, kraftwerk.
Yeah, thanks. It's been a long time, I forgot about them.

New Okay, that was interesting.
Many thanks! Sadly, I think Autobahn has dated more than Oxygene has.

New Now go listen to Tangerine Dream
I LOVE pandora. I've just started isolating all the songs I've missed since my youth.

It seems to be there.
New I've already got some Christopher Franke.
He wrote all the music for Babylon 5.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New At the moment: Triggerfinger
Great little band from near Antwerp with Animal on the drums. Wonderful live act driven by music, not gimmicks.

New mom's been here
so lately it's been Christmas music :D

Prior to the holidays, these were my aural addictions:

Ting Tings - Hands
http://www.youtube.c...tch?v=ms1C5WeSocY

Linkin Park - The Catalyst
http://www.youtube.c...tch?v=51iquRYKPbs

Neon Trees - Animal
http://www.youtube.c...tch?v=gM7Hlg75Mlo

Chromeo - Don't Turn The Lights On
http://www.youtube.c...tch?v=KP7mxcvGejQ

Delphic - This Momentary

I still get goose bumps from the Delphic video:
http://www.promonews...ntary-by-dave-ma/
The aim for this video was to focus on the people still living in and around the Chernobyl area. I wanted to show portraits of the abandoned town near the power plant then move outwards to abandoned villages where a lot of elderly people still live and on to the towns where people were relocated to.
New Re: For Peter (and All): Best $100 to introduce a music genr
This reminds me - any of you guys use last.fm?
