New He has to be born
No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the
United States, at the time of the adoption of this
Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President

natural born?

what does that mean (after a bunch of lawyers get on it)?
has there ever been a Caeserian born president?
will there be test tube presidents in the future?

New Hmmm.
I don't think there's much controversy about it.

[link|http://writ.news.findlaw.com/dean/20041008.html|John Dean] has some interesting thoughts about it, but as it stands I think the Constitution is pretty clear. [link|http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/article02/03.html|This] commentary indicates that John McCain would not have any trouble even though he was born in the Canal Zone.

If we're going to be amending the Consitution again soon, I think voting rights for DC residenst should be addressed first. (And personally I think that problem should be solved by making the non-federal parts of DC part of Maryland - meaning they wouldn't get their own unique 2 Senators, but would get a Representative to call their own and would be able to vote for Maryland's Senators.)

Cheers,
Scott.
New Implicit meaning of "natural born" in Naturalization Act of
1790. See [link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalization_Act_of_1790|Wikipedia]:
The Act also establishes the United States citizenship of children of citizens, born abroad, without the need for naturalization, "the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens".
I am a naturalized US citizen as of July 1958.

New It's all about where she drops the frog. Not how.
New Exactly
It's an exclusionary rule.

Point is, a citizen of another country who comes to the US cannot be President. Period.
