New time to see how good kia warranty service is
poor car broke its rubber band. Wierd though its a manual. Acting like an automatic with all its discs ground to metal. Each and every gear needs excess rpm's to slowly advance speed. Very hard to climb a steep hill in any gear. Gears should either work or not work at all, wonder whats going on.

New Slipping clutch I'd say - worn, oily or jammed linkage.
Oily is worse, means a bad seal on engine or transmission. Jammed linkage means you clutch is probably already ruined.

The word is "Aggressive"

I also am a firm believer in using things, typically to the full extent that can be.

Including: Traction Control (sometimes disabled), Anti-Lock Brakes, Hand Brake Levers, corners of tires, struts, steering mechanisms, Shifters, Accelerator pedals.

One thing I really like to test is the Speed-O-Meter, or modernly know as the speedometer. Also known as: The "Holy SH*T you are going how fast?" meter, The blue or red shift gauge, The "Officer, I just got new tires and it is off by a lot" guage,... the list could go on.

New Overly Courteous.
On the way back, I didn't jam up, I didn't cut-off. I only pressed a bit to help the people understand I wanted to get by.

During construction zones, I didn't do any of that even. I use my turn sign, signalling lane changes, wait about 2 seconds and continue to the next lane on multiple lane changes. I follow, watch ahead 1500+ feet. I know where the vehicles and obstacles are 100% of the time. (except when being overly corteous for the followers)

If I'll be the bottle neck, I speed up and let those that ARE travelling faster than me not kick off the cruise and get over... (mainly so I can "coon dog" them).

I time my passes to typically not make others have to change they way the are driving. If I am over taking someone they are in the right lane, and they are over taking a "truck or something" I'll either speed up to over take them sooner than they need to get over for thier take-over. Or I slow down and let them over. Typically.

I drive fast. I am a bit aggressive, I talk it up a lot. Get over your "I am a better driver because I drive a BMW" attitude. Equipment only takes it so far.

New Why.. ya took the words right outta my fingertips -
Alas, while that is a Norton featherbed\ufffd frame, indeed - it contains a twin, looking very like the 650cc Manxman version (?) - the only Norton I bought new. That 650 was a vibrating pig, whereas its predecessor, the 600 Dominator (in featherbed-like frame: which the Manxman did Not feature) was much smoother. (I sent the engine back to Bracebridge Street via Cherry Hill NJ. Months later - not a (t)whit's difference. They coulda saved all that wasted effort / their cost, with a simple snippet of Truthiness: Sorry, it really Is a vibrating pig..

Anyway - it seems to be someone's fairly sanitary special. But sans the DOHC singles which were the only Official "Norton Manx" models - of 350cc (Model 40M) or 500cc (30M) displacement. All pukka Manxes had mag. alloy drum brakes, etc.

Alas, [link|http://www.vintagenet.com/phantom/manxman.html| this] interesting mount of a 650 engine in Dominator frame appears to be missing its pic. Pity. (But I don't think that would cure the rocking-couple in that vibrator..) Hmmm - lots of dead links :-/

Oh, the question was?

Dunno about the brawl, but Greg's MO sounds sane enough por moi, expressed with that concision we expect from engineering types. Personally, I much prefer never.. being In A Hurry; going fast for awhile, just because - then dropping below the radar at just over the limit, for cruise (have yet to top out my ride at sea level; it's on the list.)

And at the $5/ level, soon - I expect I'll be seeing little of that dance.
Besides, any I-State cruising is rilly bad for neurons, no matter how palatial inside the coccoon. Brain the size of a planet / ya gets to steer ... ... / ... forever.

My 10/6 + thruppence tip

You NEVER pass another car / bike / horse at > 15 mph delta-V.
Say you're at the ton acoomin-up on Ma & Pa Kettle at 50 -
You drop to 60ish for the pass.
For all obvious psych (freaking-out) and physics reasons.
(Fangio agrees, too)

Methinks many of those who die on the autobahn are somehow connected to an egomaniac passing at 150, a bunch of folk at 80-100. Dumb. Dead peacock + innocents.

New I did
I don't care how competently you control the car. If you're pushing the margins of what you and the rest of traffic can handle, then you're a hazard to the road.

And before you throw the same NASCAR non-sequitor at me that you did at Peter, the NASCAR accident rate sucks. They may competently control their cars, but their driving is hazardous, and I don't want to be on the road with them.

New I thought clutches were considered normal deterioration
parts like break linings, and usually were not covered.
New Well, premature failure is
Typically covered under warranty.

Especially if the failure was caused by some other piece of the motor, such as a seal or crack in something that wasn't supposed to have a crack in it.

BTW, how often would you consider a clutch to fail, typically, in terms of distance driven?

I've seen them last for 200K Miles before, with someone that knows how to properly use a clutch.

I've also seen clutches only last 300 Miles, because the person rode with thier foot on the pedal, causing slippage that cooked the clutch, glazing the clutch disk, the clutch pressure plate and the flywheel.

Right now: 106k miles.

Still works, but I can tell it needs replacing. Mechanic's told me as much, too. I think I'll hold out and see how long it can last. Maybe because I don't drive alot, I can wring another year out of it. Car's 8 years old now...

New more news
its the clutch, car has 9k miles and the dealer called and said the warranty does not cover the clutch, be prepared to pay around $300 I said a clutch should last at minimum 12k miles and the tires are still round. Told him to leave the car there until the finance people repossessed it. He hung up. Called Kia Customer service, very helpful person agreed that at 9k the clutch should be good. He will see what he can do and call me back. At this point my credit that was recovering will slide into a hole again. If they wont fix it they can keep it. I will be posting a rather nice kia flame if they dont fix it. Hopefully google damage would cost them more than my loss over a repo. Time to see if old reliable will start.

New Re: Now you see why I didn't buy a Kia
The wife and I are looking to replace her vehicle. She called our insurance agent and asked, "how much will it cost to insure a new <insert car model here>?"

The agent said that the worst vehicles, insurance wise, to purchase are Kias and VWs. She asked why and was told that, if we got into an accident, after market parts are just about impossible to get, so the insurance company has to get dealer parts. These come from the factories in Korea and Germany; thus, they cost quite a lot, and so the insurance company wants to empty your wallet in advance, just in case you drive either make and before you even think about making a claim.

At the moment, we're favoring a 2007 Camry, but the nearest dealer is an asshole extraordinaire. Used cars are out of the question - I don't want to have to worry if the car was flooded in New Orleans last year.

New Used car?
Simply insist on a full dealer service history; check stamps, log book, job sheets.

Can't fall off: you get the dual benefits of the common faults (and all cars have them) on the vehicle having been likely fixed under warranty, plus you don't have to take several thousand dollars in the shorts just driving the thing out of the dealership.

You can buy more car for your money, that way.

New Not everybody uses the dealer exclusively
In the case of my Accord, the only design fault that it has is that there's a metal lip underneath the oil drain plug. Open it up, the oil hits the lip, and it splashes and runs a bit. Plus you need to jack up the car to get to it. Dealer charges $26.95 USD for an oil change - a local shop charges me $14.95 USD. There's similar savings on all scheduled maintenance items too. So all of my regular service is done locally at a better price.

I tend to keep all of my maintenance receipts, but not everybody does. But still, all of this work will never appear in a dealer's computer system.

New You're a contrary sod.
That's why I said "full dealer service history". Recorded on the dealer's computArs and everything.

These things can be checked; if they don't check out, one simply walks away.

You're cheap enough to save $12 on an oil change, yet you're willing to lose thousands (and yes, unless it's a Veyron, you do) by buying a new car? That doesn't make sense.

I know why people buy new cars - peace of mind, being the first pair of arse-cheeks on the seat, the new-car-smell, etc. - but "saving money" is never on the list.

But hey, it's your money. Well, it was.

New Dealership history isn't real likely around here.
Few people want to get screwed that deep. Most people want to deal with the mechanic they've use the last 10 years or so.

How do you get a good deal on a used car? I use a professional buyer - there are quite a few around here. Dealerships take trade-ins - they need to unload them so they take them to the auto auctions.

You tell the buyer what you want. It may take a few weeks, but the buyer haunts the auctions for a living - and knows how to leverage the dealer's need to unload the vehicle. He has a network of mechanics to inspect vehicles and do any needed work.

My buyer's attitude, "I buy new cars - they just have miles on them".

I can get a "like new" for $5 to $9 thousand. Even if the engine blew up in a month and had to be replaced I'd still be way ahead.

Tell me, how do I "lose money" by buying a new car? The current vehicle due for retirement was purchased new in July 1991. It still runs and gives acceptable, dependable service. It needs some engine work that a mechanic says will cost more in labor than the blue book value of the car is worth. I'd say that I got my money's worth out of it.

Oh, wait, there's something called "depreciation" that only matters if you're stupid enough to trade in your car every 5 years or less. Well, I'm certainly not in that category.

I'd rather get a new car and KNOW how the car was driven and treated since day one instead of placing a bet by buying someone else's trade-in (or reject). And a new car is GUARANTEED to NOT have been sitting in Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters last year.

I looked at the clutch. It did indeed give an appearance of a 80k mile clutch. Looked at hot spots on the flywheel. I dont ride a clutch I dont hardly use the fucking thing but from a techie standpoint it looked like wear so my dime. $1100.

Get the manager, explain why I am not gonna buy a clutch every six months. Blue book on the car is $3500 low wholesale (zero resale value on these things)I owe north of $8500 So deal was He gave me 8500 trade in value (remember I paid 8900 for it new) and I pay sticker price on a new (automatic this time)loaded 2006 model. After hunkering with the service manager and the warranty book there are no largish replacement costs on this one. All the big stuff is covered under the 10 yr 100k warranty. Unfortunately (for me) car has all the bells and whistles including a speedometer that claims to go to 140mph (I will check that claim in due time) so was pricy at 17k sticker. (margins arnt that hot on these things) the wife of course loves the dam thing.

Drove it home, nice pickup, handling etc and the airconditioning is frigid. They claim that the gas milage is 34-38 better than the other one.

So not really out, not really happy but fair enough.
