You got it the wrong way around. Diablo is a graphical Hack/Nethack/Larn/Rogue/etc.

In Nethack, I've gotten to the Astral Planes twice. I've actually won Larn, which featured an interesting magic system and a mid-game "But... But... But... I thought I was done!"
