I first encountered Moria 10 years ago, running the DOS version under the Acorn PC Emulator on my 8MHz ARM2-powered A3000. Not quick.

Then I discovered Angband - a complete revelation with a vastly expanded monster selection, more races, vaults, and colour.

The current state of the art in Rogue-like games is Zangband which takes things to the next plane with quests, NPCs, huge wilderness levels, terrain and lots more of everything.

(Oh, the Z? Stands for Zelazny. Many of the races and creatures are from the Amber books.)
