(This month is Joel Spolsky's latest package of old blog postings - an individual I view as not particularly insightful, yet a tireless self promoter). Couple rules I've developed include only reading things I find useful and not working outside of work hours unnecessarily. I suppose I could simply refuse to play, but that makes me a contrarian in the team and can't be good for the team spirit. So I don't fit. There are other issues involving deep architectural issues and dev priorities. But try to be polite about his idiocy, and try not to provoke an incident that will result in your leaving until after you have another job lined up. I tried to read it, but the writer just never got around to making any kind of point, although there was an awful lot of "why I wrote this book", aka "padding". Utterly pointless. After a couple of chapters, I went back to The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul. Which mostly means that he misunderstands many things in a Microsoft-centric way. But it sometimes means other things. For example at Microsoft his job, back when he was technical, was to produce design specs for Microsoft Excel. Having had the job of producing a big design up front, he is going to have a certain emotional commitment to the idea that this is a worthwhile thing to do. To be fair, big design up front clearly was the right thing to do for a company like Microsoft which was shipping shrinkwrap and had large costs for each new rev that they put out. The idea of a weekly rev with incremental feedback would have simply not worked. However the barrier that you have is that people usually can't really tell how much they like something before they see it in action. Which is why fast prototypes and incremental development help design out.
