Most similar things should apply. You might get 2.6.8 to work as I think some of the patches (if not all) got into the Sarge Kernel. You could always run the SID kernels and utils. They are not as prone to breakage, at least I have not seen them make a system unusable, except for a mixup in initrd-tools.
