Welcome to IWETHEY!

New There is a specific module for the Sony stuff, I thought.
And other things. There was a recent Person that got it all working on a Compaq, that everyone said "Nope can't be done!"

Looking for it now. It was all through help on the Debian User mailing list. Maybe 5-8 months ago.

Edits below:
Hmmm, this looks interesting: [link|http://www.celifornia.com/documents/dell700m.html|Dell 700m with Debian Sarge]

Most similar things should apply. You might get 2.6.8 to work as I think some of the patches (if not all) got into the Sarge Kernel. You could always run the SID kernels and utils. They are not as prone to breakage, at least I have not seen them make a system unusable, except for a mixup in initrd-tools.

Also found: [link|http://acpi.sourceforge.net/|ACPI Sourceforge Project], which seems to be a good place to start.

New I have the sonypi device loaded.
It doesn't seem to affect ACPI. It does make the jogdial work, though. I'll have another look at it.

I'll have a look at the Dell link. I've already scoured the SourceForge link.

Running a newer kernel could be done, though I have to do some very tricky stuff with a diskette the first time, as I made /boot too small to support more than one kernel. :-(

New Bummer man.
Use knoppix to square around your partitions and file systems. Shouldn't be too hard.
