Welcome to IWETHEY!

New ACPI on a laptop.
I'm trying to setup some typical laptop automation on my (not very new) laptop under Linux. Things are annoyingly tricky.

APM is really inadequate - no CPU throttling, for a start, although suspend works. I'd also like the lidswitch to turn the backlight off, but can't find the hook. Or the right command.

ACPI took some finagling. I had to force it because it thought the BIOS was too old. But suspend doesn't work right: I'm not sure what S1 (echo -n standby > /sys/power/state) is supposed to do but everything freezes and it won't come back. S2 (echo -n mem > /sys/power/state) works the way Suspend works in Windows - until you want to bring it back whereupon it won't resume. Then it won't switch on until I remove the battery. I also haven't made the lidswitch work yet, though I haven't tried.

It's a Sony VAIO Z505-GAM. That means a Pentium III (Coppermine) at 500 MHz and a '00 BIOS. Linux is Debian Sarge, kernel 2.6.8-2.

New And if anyone speaks up knowing this stuff ...
I've got an old Toshiba Satellite 220c that runs really damn hot. It apparently depended on Windows to tell it when it needed the fan. (You'd think this would be set in the BIOS, with possibly the ability to over-ride, but nooooooo.)

Only utilities I've found for this require Gnome, and all it's got on it is Fluxbox. (I'm just using it as an X terminal.) Anyone know of a way to do this that doesn't require one of the large DTEs?

New That isn't the answer Box.
A workaround at best.

New W2K?
I know W2K makes changes to the BIOS and when you dump it
you need to restore defaults
not sure about XP

New This thing never went above W95
But I'll look into the BIOS. I'm not optimistic, though. When I googled for it everyone else was having the same problem.

New Will try tonight
Hope it's not like last time: no/light dependencies listed, but you need foo, bar and baz to compile it. And baz requires Gnome. Bleurgh.

New There is a specific module for the Sony stuff, I thought.
And other things. There was a recent Person that got it all working on a Compaq, that everyone said "Nope can't be done!"

Looking for it now. It was all through help on the Debian User mailing list. Maybe 5-8 months ago.

Edits below:
Hmmm, this looks interesting: [link|http://www.celifornia.com/documents/dell700m.html|Dell 700m with Debian Sarge]

Most similar things should apply. You might get 2.6.8 to work as I think some of the patches (if not all) got into the Sarge Kernel. You could always run the SID kernels and utils. They are not as prone to breakage, at least I have not seen them make a system unusable, except for a mixup in initrd-tools.

Also found: [link|http://acpi.sourceforge.net/|ACPI Sourceforge Project], which seems to be a good place to start.

New I have the sonypi device loaded.
It doesn't seem to affect ACPI. It does make the jogdial work, though. I'll have another look at it.

I'll have a look at the Dell link. I've already scoured the SourceForge link.

Running a newer kernel could be done, though I have to do some very tricky stuff with a diskette the first time, as I made /boot too small to support more than one kernel. :-(

New Bummer man.
Use knoppix to square around your partitions and file systems. Shouldn't be too hard.
