New Need fontconfig?
I tried finking gvim, which seemed to work.
Yet when I tell it to launch in graphical mode, it tells me no fonts found and I need fontconfig.

But there is not fontconfig, and "fink list" does not offer it.
It shows fontconfig1 - but it is a virtual package and refuses to install.

Help?
New No idea
I'm curious why you're wasting all your time with that X based junk though.

There is probably a nice Cocoa based app that does what you want.

New Let's review the goals.
Desktop replacement for Windows Desktop.
This means MS office apps + Virtual PC running "real" MS stuff.

I also have to access back-end Windows servers for files.

Desktop replacement for Linux Desktop.
This means LOTS of x-terms into a bunch of remote systems,
along with many virtual desktops. Along with lots of remote
Gvim windows, and an occasional X11 app window.

But it also means local gvim using scp to edit report files.
This is a big deal for me.

It also means a comfortable IBM keyboard in my lap, a Kensington
Expert Mouse (large trackball) and 2 external monitors.

The real concerstone of my existence is gvim and ssh bash shell
access to multiple systems.

Additional Open Source software installed via Fink is a nice
touch for play. I installed gvim since the vim that came with
the system was not compiled with the GUI libs, ie: gvim.

But that was more of an exploration of fink than a true requirement.

I should have just gone to macvim.org and downloaded that, which
is what I'll do next.

But I still want to be able to run GUI X11 programs on the Mac,
which means I'll have to resolve the fontconfig issue sooner
or later.

Note: I'm disliking the top application bar more and more.
I want the application menu to be on the window of the app.
This one thing might be a deal breaker for me.

New I guess, but XTerms are lame compared to Terminal.app

New But I can't seem to ssh somewhere and 'X' back
unless I use an xterm to start off with.

I just tried Peter's iterm with the same result.

Going to sleep. Thanks for trying to help.
New Re: But I can't seem to ssh somewhere and 'X' back
That's because you need X running.

When you start the X11 application, it automatically gives you an XTerm, because that's what it's configured to do.

X is still running.

If you just ssh somewhere in any other terminal application, without starting X, you won't be able to throw a window back to your desktop.

BTW, you're not being stupid; this is what paradigm shifts feel like.

New Nope, X is running.
I have no problem sshing to another box via the xterm and getting the display back.
But neither terminal.app or iterm provide the DISPLAY variable (even when using -X).

Also, how could they. Neither could execute local X apps as well.
New when using ssh -X on my solaris box
I ssh -X boxley@ipaddy
get a nice little box.
echo $display, returns blank
/usr/X/bin/xclock, returns a nice lttle clock to my desktop. I think ssh handles the addressing,
lets look in sshd_config
11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10

so my display would be mylocalIP:10.0
hope that helps
thanks,
bill

New Box, I KNOW you are trying to be helpful
But you're not!!!!! you're driving me insane!!!
These are all baby steps that I'm fully aware of.
But if you are coming from an OS-X 10.4 box, maybe you have something set differently from mine that allows it to work.

So, from the beginning: Are you currently on a OS-x 10.4 box?
New I do not assume you know any "baby steps"
and have found out that I quite often dont know baby steps and find it useful in some of these threads. Now one more have you done
sshIntobox$ ./xclock -display boxIamreallyon:thesSettingOfXdisplayOffset.0
what happens when you do that? No I use an older version of OSX
thanx,
bill

New Export DISPLAY yourself
and it should work.

New Sneaky
#1 - create an a real xterm - ssh into target system.
#2 - echo $DISPLAY - this will change on every session going in.
#3 - launch iTerm.
#4 - from iTerm, ssh in to the same target box.
#5 - set the DISPLAY to the above one listed.
#6 - xcalc - works.

I guess it is a usable one-of-kludge - but not something I would be willing to do on an ongoing basis.

I could setup a script to be executed on login. If the DISPLAY value is set, save it. If it is not, then use the last saved one (assuming it is from an active "correct" connection) (dangerous!)

Thanks.

Happiness awaits :-)

The fontconfig thing I'll have to look into.
