Is it possible the isolinux (or boot floppy image ?) in the .ISO is missing/corrupt? (That would imply the CD you encountered it with first wasn't the one you thought it was) If not, that's about the only thing I can think of that move along with burns across writers.

It just wouldn't boot on any other machine I tried. Perhaps a cosmic ray hit the CD with enough impact to change a bit in the meanwhile? [link\|http://www.aaxnet.com\|AAx]
