Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Yep
I told you to do a Net-install :-P

Do you have a 2.4 kernel or a 2.6 kernel?

If a 2.6, make sure udevd, hal and dbus are running. Then make sure these modules are loaded: ide-cd cdrom ide-core

Similar stuff for 2.4, except in /dev, "MAKEDEV hda hdb hdc std" udevd and hal won't even load on 2.4.

Hotplug is used for more than just "usb stuff" so it needs to be there too, discover1-data should already be loaded (which pulls in discover1)

udevd makes a dynamic /dev/ directory and will create devices, provided the modules are udevd aware and notify it.

hal is used to detect things.

Hope I am giving you the right 00 shotgun.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New I will try the net install but . .
. . I prefer CD installs because they're repeatable. Kernel claims to be 2.4 by the way, and devices are there, /dev/cdrom => /dev/hda hda exists.

New So are the net-installs (once it gets to stable)
Once Sarge is released as stable it'll be as repeatable as ever.

Pretty much, the whole responses file you can setup with Sarge is repeatable.

What is not to like?

New And by then it's too late :)
The reason I can't use "stable" is the kernel revision is too old to support RAID controllers, so I'd have to use a 3rd party installer with a more recent kernel - not quite the definition of "stable". Actually, that's what I had started to do when I ran into the RAID controller init problem and I turned to Sarge for a fix, bit it had the same problem.

Fortunately this CD-ROM screw-up has been fixed in the binary i386-1 dated 3-14-05 and the install went fine this morning.

In this case I'm doing two machines that are supposed to be identical, but they'll be built up to 2 months apart, so the CD install method is my preference.

I valued your opinion more when I was being paid to.
