Postscript: I don't blame Florida Hospital for this one. I've been at Florida Hospital a lot lately and they're very good.

New Sure, but there are a few rules.
1. Do not hero worship anyone, especially not politicians or the monarchy. You can still get semi-religious in football matches or read Hello! magazine but that's not hero worship.
2. You must know that George Bush is an idiot.
3. You have the right to complain about the National Health Service, explain how's it awful and even have private healthcare but don't suggest it should be privatised.
4. We don't like guns.
5. We like queues. Uncivilised foreigners jump queues.
6. We don't say 'nigger'. You may hear 'Paki' or 'towelhead' but please don't listen to people who say that.
7. Don't go on about Iraqi freedom. We're not that stupid.
8. Don't go on about the threat of Al-Qaeda. We don't go around being afraid.

Other than that, you should be fine.
Matthew Greet

But we must kill them. We must incinerate them. Pig after pig, cow after cow, village after village, army after army. And they call me an assassin. What do you call it when the assassins accuse the assassin? They lie. They lie and we must be merciful to those who lie.

New #4 - my buddy Richard W.
"4. We don't like guns."

who I visited in London shot air pistols on the range (I went with him once), but would SERIOUSLY have preferred to shoot a real pistol. He and I talked about guns all the time. Given the number of people I got to know in my 6-week stint there, I have a tendency to believe that there is a statistically large number of people that 'like guns' over there. Not a majority, perhaps, but enough enthusiasts that a shooter needn't feel alone.

IOW, isn't the royal 'we' reserved for only a few?

New My point is no, YOU don't like guns. I've met folk over
there that like guns. They liked shooting enough that they shot with air pistols when it became impossible to shoot REAL pistols. There are also folk over there that like hunting (with guns). Do YOU like hunting (with guns)? No? Does that mean that 'We don't like hunting (with guns)'?

You are not entitled to speak for all people there, any more than I am entitled to speak for all people here. As much as you would like to characterize your opinions as universal, they are not.

New Sheesh.
And I've met people who like to rape children - and more than one. So, should I say, "We, in the United States, like to rape children"? What's the threshold for saying "we"?

New What's amusing...
...is that within 30 miles of where I live, which is a major conurbation, there isn't a damn gun club.

No, skip, we honestly don't like guns. Handguns are for nutters and shotguns are for farmers and toffs. And if you think that's non-representative of British public opinion, then I suggest you and I do some field research over here.

We'll need beer. A lot of beer. Thankfully, I can do that.

New Let me clarify
In Britain, like any country, you will find a wide range of opinions, including people who love guns. The difficulty with sporting pistols is an overreaction to the Hungerford murders. Otherwise no one would care about people shooting at paper targets. Rather, the police generally don't carry guns and the public aren't interested in shooting intruders.

As for the royal 'we', it only replaces 'I'. It doesn't affect the normal use of 'we', you illiterate swine.
Matthew Greet

- Colonol Kurtz, Apocalypse Now.
New And purposeful misunderstanding replaces
what? Communication?

That was my point. He was speaking for himself. For his own opinion. He was using "we", instead of "I".
