Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Debian problem, where to ask?
With both Sarge and with Woody (a RAID enhanced Woody install CD) and with both Adaptec 2120S and with LSI 320-1 RAID controllers.

In both case they are correctly detected but loading the driver hangs at 47%.

New Lists
Debian-Boot for Sarge
Debian-User for Woody though it being enhanced might null it.

You should stick with the Sarge install...

BTW, which version of the Installer are you using? There is a new one created everyday. Plus the Release Candidates.

[link|http://lists.debian.org|Murphy the do-all server] has places for list signups. Be warned, Both Debian-User and Debian-Boot are heavy on the volume.

if you wan't the e-mail addresses as All debian lists are open, make sure you say "please CC me, I am not subscribed" if you don't subscribe.
  • debian-boot@lists.debian.org
  • debian-user@lists.debian.org

Thing they will need to know:
  • Architecture: Sparc, x86, Alpha, etc.
  • Motherboard Chipsets
  • Raid Controllers models and firmware versions
  • Debian-Installer Version (for sarge) and where it was retrieved from
  • Process to repeat the problem, if repeatable
  • An open mind to some words that might be deemed at a bit harsh, they just need and want the facts.
Not a comprehensive list, but it should get you something.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Well this appears to be a motherboard problem.
The net install did exactly as the CD version did - hung at 47% on loading the RAID driver. I transplanted the disk set and controller to an older computer (700-MHz Duron) and it went through fine.

Have ordered a different brand motherboard with a different chipset and will try that.

New Resolution
The original motherboard was a Matsonic MS8177C with the VIA KT600 chipset. I got another board, an ASUS A7V8X-X with VIA KT400 chipset (no SATA, but I don't need that) and Sarge loaded the RAID driver with only a hesitation at 47%.

New Ahhh, waiting for the card initialization.
evidently the KT600 chipset has more issues than I thought.

I used to have a KT600, I couldn't take it anymore. I went to the KT880 (I'm pretty sure) and many things just work on it. Versus the KT600 needing everything in the BIOS *just* so, in order to work with Windows *OR* Linux. I guess I might have to look at getting away from VIA, even though I really do like the chipset.
