Welcome to IWETHEY!

New New version of IE coming
but only for Windows XP SP2. It is still not clear what features it will have.

New On past performance...
...it'll suck, but it'll suck faster than the competition.

Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New IE6 == IE5 reskinned plus oogly features and
IE7 will be very similar being IE5 reskinned with Coolio dynamic skins with cool Anti-ActiveX ActiveX countermeasures to keep them from being changed by websites.

NOT only THAT... but RealTime Dynamic Content Rendering (RTDCR) of websites, with Enhanced MS-XML Intelligent-Tags to enhance your "Web Experience" with Special IIS only served XML-exec commands.

Plus, New MS-XML Super-Duty "Really Works"™ Bad guy protection... err Protection from Bad Guys... yeah. For an additional Cost of course, you know how hard it is to keep Windows secure!

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Predictable MS feature set
Standard MS Upgrade Marketing Slogan: It sucks less than it used to. (Though sometimes they manage to even screw up that feature).
New From what little I've seen on the subject...
...the features all seem related to spyware and malware.

Speaking of which, the popup blocker on the XP SP2 should not have blocked sites from using IFRAMES within a page. An IFRAME is not a popup - it's just a place within the current window.
New Tabs
Cause they can't fix any of the other problems without an OS rewrite.

That'd be my guess...that they think Firefox is only cool cause of the tabs.

New I think you've probably got it.

New And the sad part is ...
They're probably counting on most users thinking the same thing. And they're probably right.

New Oh, I don't know
One thing they can't do is really secure it. One part driving the growing adoption of Moz is tabs... but the other part is not getting any more of that farkin' spyware, and as beep pointed out, they can't fix it without doing a major rewrite of the OS, and esp. of Win32.

New But how do you show that?
I've installed Firefox on a couple of friends' systems. How long do they have to use it before they realize, "Hey, you know what? I haven't noticed any popups in a while." I haven't heard back yet, so I don't know. And weigh that against how many sites exclude them because the UserAgent doesn't say IE?

New You don't
OTOH, all the people up here that I've spoken with are taking it up for different reasons. It's not the tabs that is being stated as the reason.... nobody says "I installed firefox so I could get tabs"; it's all "I installed firefox so I could get rid of the bullshit."

The word is out there; people have come to associate IE with uncontrollable bullshit, while firefox lets you have the control. Among the folks up here (and believe me, they're not all cognoscenti; some are so far from cognoscenti that the light from cognoscenti will take a million years to reach them) IE is seen as a tool to allow the user to be marketed to, much like television, while firefox allows them to control what and how much gonzo marketing leaks in; they can control popups, whether they get them, who they get them from, etc, while IE seems to be oriented to making sure that you get the advert, whether you want it or not.

New Tabbed browsing? what's that?
Not a feature my clients aren't particularly interested in. They aren't even that interested in pop-up supression, though they like it.

Basically, they're desperate. I have to charge them $150 to $200 a wack to strip parasites off (and that's not nearly enough for the effort) and they don't want to see me back a week later.

The Los Angeles Times had a feature article a few weeks ago on people abandoning Internet use because they simply can't afford it. They're paying $300 a pop to get their machines cleaned AND often losing all their data in the process because larger computer service companies can't afford staff skilled enough to really clean up a machine for a mere $300.

New Firefox gets used around here for development
Mainly for the cookie management and the Web Developer toolbar. Yes, I know this has nothing to do with Joe User, but it's a data point at least.

New Around here

Everything else we're calling "lucky if it works".
This is for the new dhtml/js features we're working on.
Very wizzy stuff.

New I have an opposite problem.
I hate using anything other than Opera because I use the mouse-gestures so much. *Everytime* I use IE or FireFox I forget that Right+Left click doesn't work to go back a page... :-(

New I saw at least two mouse gesture extensions for Firefox

They might be worth investigating.
