I have an ASUS AV8-Deluxe motherboard.

Now what?

Never mind.
Mepis knowledge base lookup - click on the mixer and enable it.

New Common problem.
about 25% of the first questions about Debian on the Debian User mailing list is: How do I get sound working?

Well, thet default answer is: Did you turn up the mixer volumes?

About 90% success rate on that one.

One is led to the question... should these be at some kind of level rather than muted or all the way down?

That is a hotly debated issue. The answer is NO. Mainly many people have the volume cranked on the multimedia system.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New I'm in the 10%
Finally decided to plug in some speakers. No joy. Mixer is up. Have tried alsaconf, and dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base. Nothing.

New Make sure you
Don't have ANY legacy OSS modules installed.

OSS-emulation modules are fine.

New Does that include gstreamer-oss and alsa-oss?
They're the only packages I have installed that mention oss. Time to check the modules. I did what you told me back [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=181203|here], and lsmod now shows:
snd_pcm_oss 54312 1\nsnd_mixer_oss 19904 2 snd_pcm_oss
So should I remove everything that references oss?

New Nope...
But make sure you have everything hooked up properly...

I know that many times *I* forget to even turn ON the speakers.

New You're funny
Greg is oh-so-subtlely prodding me to fess up to what I did. Instead, I'll describe my setup. See how far in you get before you realize what I did.

I have a set of speakers that can be used either with an amplified input, or with line-in and on-board amplification. I'm using line-in, and ... ummm ... forgot to turn on the on-board amplification.
