New Best of luck. I hope it misses you this time too!
New Bros in law not on evac warning, yet.
But it looks like a pretty tight track. Big question is if it will actually stregthen as much as they are saying...and if it hits at high tide.
If you push something hard enough, it will fall over. Fudd's First Law of Opposition

New what suxs is the evac is ordered for ABC Im a C
C being a category three head on in Pinellas county with 15ft storm surge, until the dam thing gets over cuba and reforms they dont know. I think that where I am a 15ft storm surge will not cause major flooding on me. This based on heading of winds, tide and the creek 400 yards away.

bill

New Oh well, better safe than sorry
At least when it comes to real threats. (Which a hurricane is.)

New Well I am to Pit my experience and knowledge
against the better be safe than sued local government. If it is a category three which is what the guv predicts the water surge is going to be 15 ft the tide at fri 8/13 08:41PM L the eye is due right over mu house at present. The bay is 1.5 miles from the house with a creek leading into the bay 400 yards from my house and currently 10 feet below where I am. The winds will be approaching from the south pushing the water AWAY from my location, the creek will be draining all of clearwater into the bay.I think at worst a foot of water in the house quickly draining below my level into a lowe 5 acre field behind me.

For wind Damage I feel in good shape, we have 3 rooms 2 walls concrete with minimal windows and wood shutters. If a 110 mph wind comes by It should weather it. I have seen the roof, it appears well made. My weak spot is 3 french doors in the back away from the winds. I will be moving items around approriately. Placing important papers in dry containers up high etc.

4 days in a shelter which there are warning will be full and uncumfortable. Take 1.5 days to make orlando just to find there is no room paying road prices or prepare for a storm which is similar to several I have attended elsewhere but this time warm rain instead of driving snow.

bill

New I'm in Orlando right now
Roads from west into town are packed solid according to news reports. Flights out are booked solid, I heard the front desk clerk here (downtown Marriott) say they are booked solid and other hotels reporting same.

Godspeed!

New and it's a cat 3
if I was on the coast, I'd be hightailing it.

Garage doors have a habit of being blown in with these storms...(and then the roof goes shortly thereafter).
New Luck, to all involved!
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New Im not on the coat 1.5 miles from the bay(inside bay)
wind pushing water away from me. 2 vans snugged against garage door to break the wind. Have been in a lesser built house for sustained 75 gusts to 100.
Supplies
food easy to make
camp stove, plent of gas for same
large chocolate bars for cheap energy as well as hard salami and cheese
tarps ready to install.
half of the house setup as safety zone if the french doors go.
Both makita batteries charged
hammer nails and screws
water gallon per person per day
lots of large pots to catch rainwater in.
5 gallon pot of water in the freezer to make a block
candles up the wazoo
bucket for toilet if flooding makes flushing impossible
2 gallon of 69% chlorine for water puification
important papers in a watertight container ready to go.
Big Van with donuts blown at exhaust manifold for emergency escape
if the main roof goes still a couple of safe areas where debris shouldnt harm, just going to get wet
most important a 5 day supply of rum and smokes in case it takes a while to cleanup the area.
thanx,
bill

New Its mandatory but not enforced
storms are not anything new, happen with regularity since the beggining of time. If I was in a different locatin I might well have evacuated but I feel that I can survive a cat 4 right here. All bets are off if its a cat5 but have enough knowhow to survive Get the Large van in the garage and every one in and hang tough. Hopefully I am right.

bill

New Looks like it will hit there today
How you holding up, Boxley? My local paper seems confused, first it says it will hit early then it says it will hit late evening.

I just remembered also, my aunt and her family live in Orlando....

New gale force winds by 1:30 pm
then the main show about 6-8pm, track appears to be holding for the center to pass overhead. The barrier Islands are closed to traffic and the skyway bridge as well [link|http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/sunshineskyway1_bridge.html|http://www.pbs.org/w...yway1_bridge.html]
the cross bay expressways will close when winds hit 40mph. Advisory now is find a shelter where you is, its too late to travel.

who has a better chance? the refugee column or the planners who devise a plan and it sometimes works? At least the planners are usually more comfortable. If I am going to be miserable for 4 days I would rather be miserable at home if I deem it safe ebough.

New True
I think you'll be allright if you have fortified things enough and, this is the BIG if, haven't underestimated the power of the storm. Since storms are so unpredictable, that's what worries me a little.

Brilliant idea, putting vans against the garage door. What are you putting against the french windows? Or are you just going to give them a wide berth or board them up?

New well not my french doors (I am a renter)
there appears to be enough slop between the tracks and the frame to not allow a preassure buildup that could explode them outwards. The main issue will be flooding and debris breaking them. I have policed the area fairly well and have the pool cover racked up against the bottom. A pool cover is (picture a tarp married to bubble wrap) large enough to cut and stub 1 foot 2X4's to attach it to the french door frames to keep a lot of the weather out. Of course if the french doors go we retreat to the safe rooms 2 bedrooms with wood shutters over minimal windows, a bathroom and a passage door that can be easily nailed shut and wait it out. The mattresses will be avaiable for shoring up doors and windows and enough various lumber to keep the weather out (same priciples I learned while training to keep ships from sinking in combat) should apply to landlocked structures, keep the water out.
