Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I guess few people use Debian and Evo for e-mail?

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Well, you just called them all bigots :)
Way to sell!

New Moreover... was a poke at someone...
ELSE. Wasn't intended for you Peter. Though I understand your concern and dislike of being called a Biggot, should I call you an Exchange Shill then?

Would that make it better? No I doubt it.

But, needless to say, you might be surprised at how much there is available with the plugin.

I know, many people have been waiting for this event to come. Personally, I don't like Exchange... and you know why. My favorite Pay-For-Proprietary-Software Groupware suite is GroupWise. Funny isn't it. How the company that supplies the GroupWare suite I like most, also provides the connector to Exchange, written company that they own, going the full monty.

Soon, sir my prediction of a few months ago, are going to be apparent. (Groupwsie being FOSS within 2 years), and not because of a Desperate Company trying to make a hedge bet that, that action will turn it around.

Wait, we shall see.

P.S.:
Peter, I sincerely apologize for hurting your feelings.

New Re: I guess few people use Debian and Evo for e-mail?
I don't go anywhere near Lookout, Expunge, or any of that crap. I use my browser for email. IMO email is like sending letters in clear envelopes by passing them from house to house until they arrive. It's a shit medium of no use for real communication. Dinosaurs like Expunge are just the sawdust of the 90s.

New I'm confused.
Either you're a troll or really confused.

New Troll? How?
You know my opinion of computing - it's the greatest tool ever invented to distribute the darkness at the edge of the id.

New Because it's a ridiculous statement
And appears to be designed entirely to elicit a response.

In which case, IHBT. IHL. HAND.

New Re: Because it's a ridiculous statement
No, it was a genuine reaction to GF's work. "Why is this brilliant sysadmin fucking around with Exchange?" Imagine Beethoven fascinated by a bent harmonica.
-drl
New It's just a tool
Remember, my contention that there is nothing in the free software space that can do what Exchange does as easily and effectively as Exchange does it is and will remain unchallenged for the forseeable future, unless something momentous happens with Opengroupware.org.

It's too easy to focus on the technology itself instead of what we're using the technology for. It's infrastructure; it allows things to happen.

I use email every single day of my working life as part of my job; I effectively and rapidly communicate with the people I need to.

The company has an Exchange server, and I use Outlook. I had zero input into this decision, and really quite resent Greg's implication that I'm a biggot [sic] because my employer chooses to use a commercial messaging server that's not his favourite pay-for closed-source capitalist exploitation/ratware product, which is Groupwise.

Outlook's actually REALLY REALLY good at the PIM side of things(calendar/contacts/tasks), and blows chunks as an email client, but I get over it and get on with the far more important business of making motorway signs work - which, after all, is what brings home the bacon.

New Bacon?
Brings home the blood sausage, maybe. I can't remember ingesting or even seeing any authentic bacon whilst on your island nation :)

But to put sarcasm aside - PIM? Do you really *need* a computer to manage personal information? (BTW isn't all information personal to you?) Email could be - once was - a valuable thing. Scope cancer destroyed the idea of useful electronic communication.

I hated Lookout from the first minute. I once was a "key player" (oh God how sickening is the yuppie lexicon) in "migrating" 40000 "users" from CC:Mail to Lookout. We accomplished it at great expense and labor - and the end result was - MOTS. Nothing was really done, nothing accomplished. It was a Waste of Time, Effort, Money, and Spirit.

Computers in corporate life are crutches for crippled management strategy. Outlook, Groupwise, Wiseass, NotUs Motes, etc. etc. etc. Ximpleton etc. etc. etc. are the sponge rubber on that crutch that fits nicely under the corporate armpit.
-drl
New Whatever.
I'm not going to go into the gory details of my job, but it involves tracking multiple conversations with a lot of different people both within the company and without.

Yes, I need a computer. Simply keeping on top of what I've said to whom and when would turn into a full-time job and I'd need my own secretary.

A single scheme update (the basic unit of my work) can involve conversations and data exchange between a couple of dozen people, in the extreme case.

And computers aren't crutches in MY corporate life - they're the tools with which we provide information to the driver at the roadside (and back again), 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - that's what we do.

New To address your concerns...
There are many among us that do not have the ability to choose the server platform for mail.

I happened to recently go through HAND editing binaries to accomplish the same task as I just did in about 3 minutes with "dpkg-buildpackage".

Literally is a no brainer once you understand the tools to use and understand how to use those tools.

Posted how I did it to Debian-User... I also mentioned I had it publically available for D/L. Quite a few IP Addresses have gotten it so far. Most of them have zero Referrals, so it was a cut-n-paste, a few have the initial post as the referrer, while other have lists.debian.org as the referrer.

I'd garner to say, that there are more than a few people that want/need this piece and it has been sorely lacking in Debian the Distro and a few other place.

It's sad that great sysadmins aren't better used.
