How big is your Profile?

BTW that's \\Documents and Settings\\YourID\\*

For some reason W2K puts Temporary Internet Files in your Profile. Also, you aren't storing data directly on your Desktop, are you? And if you use OE, you have moved where it stores its files to outside your Profile, aren't you?

New Re: XP login speed
these are new XP installs right out of the box
not using roaming profiles

some reasearch suggested running gpedit.msc (group policy) and making a change but I tried it on a local machine and it made no difference

didn't try importing to server as I am not really using any group policies on this small network

New Strip out the extra services
XP loads a crapload more services on startup than 2000/98.

[link|http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm|Here] is a page on getting rid of unneeded services.

And [link|http://www.infoworld.com/article/02/10/18/021021opwinman_1.html|here] is Brian's article on clearing out the extra services.

New Thanks!
Passed on to an unfortunate who recently bought a beast-Machine. I thought there must be such a list - and the blkviper one especially, is pitched to the LCD nicely. Gawd - #12.. Beast-defaults: Come And Get me cha cha cha

The others noted for future SYAs.

New Re: XP login speed
Check your error log. Chances are, there are certificate issues with the client vs. the server. The timeout period is LONG for a failed directory login - then you drop to the standard "compatibility mode" Lanman login. If you are properly authenticating, it will happen fast. Is your 2k server set up in native or compatibility mode?

New Naw.
Cert errors are harmless - they just mean there's no CA on your network.

With Windows 2000 domain controllers there isn't more than one method of logging in - it's all done via Kerberos. No Kerberos ticket, no login. NT workstations have this process shielded from them, but it boils down to the same thing. Certificates are not used in the Windows 2000 authentication process.

The only real practical differences between native and compatibility mode for the domain is that in native mode you get universal groups and can nest global groups.

New Re: XP login speed
turns out the main culprit was DNS
since my network is strictly local and my sole server is also the DNS server
I didn't specify a DNS address when configuring WinXP
(the default is automatic discovery and with only one possible DNS server to connect to I foolishly assumed.....)
anyway XP apparently looks until it is satisfied that no Internet DNS is available (over a minute on my boxes) and then reluctantly logs in
now it logs in normally being forced to accept the local DNS server
