Post surgery they often will try to give the you Vicodan. They SUCK. They are specially formulated to have a rapid increase in tolerance. This is so druggies can't abuse them. They also only work the 1st day for pain. By the 3rd dose they are worthless.
Make sure you get REAL drugs such has oxycodone and/or dilaudid. Also, a good mix is toradol and oxycodone. Toradol is the most powerful NSAID made, so it will control the swelling and have a sparing effect on the amount of oxycodone you need to control the pain.
Do NOT get percodan or percocet. The are oxycodone combos with aspiren and/or tylenol. You would rather have oxycontin which is a long time release formulation of pure oxycodone along with toradol.
Do NOT take the toradol for more than 4 days. It causes stomach ulcers by inhibiting mucus movement in the stomach which then allows acid to break through.
