New Looking for suggestions to evict a cat
There is a cat under our front porch, I saw it scramble under there today. I had fleas in our house last year, and believe you me, I don't want them back. I suspect that might have been the source, which I never saw last year.

We've just had the house and outside (particularly the porch area) sprayed preventatively before spotting this cat, but I want to block the hole it went in. I also sprinkled flea powder on the ground by the hole so he/she has to scramble through it.

How can I get it to come out? Would it be humane to spray water under the porch and see if he/she leaves? Would catnip work? Any serious suggestions? (Not "go shoot it, sorry. ;) )

New Depends on how much work you want to go through...
Do you know if the cat is a wild cat, or someone's pet?

If it's someone's pet, call them and make it their problem. ;-)

If it's a wild cat,

1) Put some food on the deck
2) Make nice with the cat
3a) If this works, see if you can put the cat in a cage.
3b) If this does not work, borrow or purchase a live trap (about raccoon size should work) and bait it with tuna.
4) Take it somewhere to be fixed. If you do not, you are likely to end up with many more cats than you really want in the neighborhood.

If you take the cat to the "Humane" Society, it will almost certainly be euthanized. There are other options for wild cats; look through your Yellow Pages for "Animal Rescue" entries. Even if one of these places can't help you directly, they will probably know where to send you.

Note: We have had at times 28 cats under our care, 27 of which were wild, semi-wild, or the progeny of wild cats. Originally, there was only one wild cat living under our deck... so I speak from experience. ;-)

New Are you positive it's a domestic cat?
Bobcat and Lynx are making serious inroads into settled areas. I'd be careful about "coaxing" the critter. Get a good look at it if you can to be sure it is what you think it is. The "cat" we had in our crawl space when I was a wee tyke turned out to be a rather aggresive Opossum. Had to get animal control to trap and remove it.

Well, it appeared to be the hind legs and tail and back of a yellow/orange striped tabby type cat. I didn't see it's face, it was too busy trying to scramble under the porch, and it took it a few minutes.

John said to watch for a couple days and make sure it's a) a cat, b) not wearing a collar, and c) really living there and not just diving under there to hide from me yesterday.

I'm afraid to try and coax any creature I don't know, I had enough trouble trapping a hurt pigeon last year for Animal control, and also dealt with a crazed Raccoon that I wasn't happy about who suddenly fell out of our tree. (Fortunately, I never had to catch him, Animal Control came and tried but lost him down the sewer).

I think the flea powder will hopefully prevent the flea issue from reoccurring, and I've tried asking around whether anyone owns this cat, but I don't know but two of our neighbors, really.

Thanks for the suggestions, though Scott, we're keeping everything in mind.

Hehee, thanks Don.

I was trying to answer both people's posts in one, but I don't know how to lift quoted text from two posts yet and put it in one. :)

New Re: Looking for suggestions to evict a cat
Go to a local zoo and get some tiger dung. Spread it appropriately. The invader will 'scent the larger presence' and depart. Repeat every once in a while.
