Now that I have a pc with some power......
I haven't been able to play any new games for the past few years because of a weak system. That has changed and I'm interested in picking up a few "modern" titles. I think the last game I bought new for my old pc was Civ II. I just picked up Black and White and it runs fine. Now I'm looking forward to trying out some of the better titles of the past 2-3 years. Suggestions/reviews?

Here's some goodies.
System Shock 2 Any Thief game (The Dark Project, The Metal Age) - too bad Looking Glass is out of business... I'm enjoying Neverwinter Nights, but some people don't like it. YMMV. If you do get it, the official campaign is so-so, but the point is the user-created mods.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Huge game world, completely mapped out: you can walk from one end of the continent to the other, though for a first level character it can take a few days of 24 hour walking (real time, not game time, this game is HUGE), and probably wouldn't surprise the trip.
When the passersby say "the adventure is outside the cities" they're not kidding... to advance you need to get out and go cross country, or you'll get nowhere.

Warning, major timesink ahead
Most games take about forty to fifty hours to solve. Solving morrowind (ie- completing the central set of quests) takes about seven hundred hours.

Some games
Civilization III would be good if you've played Civlilzation II, but the game differs a bit from II and has better graphics.
The Sims and the expansion packs are fun to play. I think it is kind of neat to have little computer people you have some control over their lives.
Master Of Orion 3 is now out, I heard it was great. If you liked Civilization, you'll like Master of Orion.

From what I've heard
Civ 3 and MOO 3 are basically the same game with more bells and whistles in the graphics dept. Not too interested in replaying a game that has the same strategy but is just busier.
I tried Warcraft 3 and I couldn't stand it. Warcraft 2 was fun but WC3 seemed like the same ol same ol with jazzier movies.
Havn't played any Sim's titles since Sim Earth. I liked the ones I did play. I'll give it a try.

Re: Now that I have a pc with some power......
Off the top of my head, here is what I would consider great games of the last few years.
Neverwinter nights : the best CRPG since Planescape:Torment Planescape:Torment : Best of the Bioware games, considered best CRPG ever by some Grand Theft Auto III : bizzare and fun, seriously not for kids Kohan : Better then Warcraft 3 for strategy Emperor RotMK : Best yet in the Impressions City Buildier series Max Payne : My favorite of the last wave of FPS games HalfLife : Best FPS game since Doom StarTrek Armada : I not II, if you like Star Trek it's light strategy fun. Alpha Centuri : If you like Civ games, Alpha Centuri is the best of the lot Wizardy 8 : Old school CRPG, if you like that sort of game Wizardy takes the series out with a bang

It rocks, and looks nice too.

Unreal Tournament 2003, baby.
Halflife is nice because it'll run slicker'n snot on current rigs, but in all other aspects is showing its age.
Get UT2003. Get the Epic and Digital Extremes bonus packs. Play an "invasion" game with bots. Instant fun! And it sure looks purty.
