New Re: If all the soldiers in Basra surrendered
That was what I was told on the way to work this morning, courtesy of NPR. They said the 51st at least had surrendered. However, though NPR is all too willing to jump on the military, they aren't necessarily the best in the field.

Any resistance in Basra is currently isolated pockets, where Iraqi resistance has moved into high population civilian areas. Lots of honor it takes there, to use your own noncombatants as hostages.
New Trumped up.
According to CNN it was a junior officer masquerading as a general in order to receive preferential treatment.

One more example of why the media is a lousy way to follow a war. ;-)

New 51st
Isn't that the one that they said surrendered on Friday?

Re: moving into high population areas: Take a look at the history of modern urban combat (Stalingrad. Moscow during WWII are good examples; from your own country, Atlanta during the War Between the States; or Hue in Vietnam). Everybody does that, and if someone were invading the US, US armed forces would do it too.

Expect more attacks from "civilians"; Iraq wants this to turn into a quagmire. Also, expect it to get harder as forces move north; southern Iraq is largely Shia, which are hostile to Saddam (but also hostile to US), whereas the areas around Baghdad are largely Sunni, which are the same group that the government is.

After Saddam is killed and his government smashed, expect the Shia in the south to turn on allied forces; there is no love for the Americans among the Shia. They may hate Saddam more, but make no mistake, they hate Americans too.

New Sadly that sentiment is spreading to many countries

Bush will reap what he sows & as we have discussed many times in advance of this - it is as plain as the nose on ones face that Bush admin would use media to mask growing world hostility & growing Arab hate.

We only have to look among us here for those who truly believe that the Iraqis were desperate for US troops to storm their border & 'liberate' them (& plant the US flag in the captured cities like some stupid troops were doing).

It would be funny if it wasn't so alarming, that apparently otherwise rational Americans could believe that bit of Bush propaganda so deeply. The pathetic part is that these same people seem to continue to deny what they see and read, even in official US press reports because so many of them lack the ability to see beneath the surface & that surface is the propaganda net prepared by Bush admin.

Loyalty and pride in nationality can be excellent attributes. Blind faith is an evil.

Cheers

Doug
