Being protective of personal details is very reasonable and understandable. I think that many of us draw a line between public and private. We just draw it in different places per person. (And sometimes per group.)
As far as navigating groups, I don't think that I have seen a better designed discussion group than this one. The main problem that you will face is just that we have known each other for so danged long. You will have to live with some "in" comments that go over your head, but I think you guessed that.
Most of us are computer geeks. Other than that relatively common phenomena, we are all over the map politically, personally, and geographically.
And since you have introduced yourself, I will do likewise.

As for getting around all of the forums, I recommend hitting "Mark all read". Then going into preferences and making sure that under the posting preferences both "Show New Posts Only?" and "Show Forums With New Posts Only?" are checked. Then submit that.
Never again mark all read. Instead as forums come up, look at them and decide if you want to live without them. If you do, then use the handy links that Greg provided at [link|http://twiki.iwethey.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GregFolkert|http://twiki.iwethey.../Main/GregFolkert] to mark them read for years to come. Voila! Those forums disappear and never come back. :-)
Cheers,
Ben
PS And for navigating the whole web, I recommend giving [link|http://www.google.com/|http://www.google.com/] a try. Think of a topic. Type a few key words connected to that topic in. Submit. Follow links. Repeat as desired. :-)
