Finally broke down and bought a new system
Athlon xp 2800, 512 Mb RAM, 2 80 Gb IDE Hard drives with 8 Mb cache, Plextor CD writer, ATI 128 Rage video, 2 extra system fans. Right now it has Win2k Pro installed. I'm waiting till the price comes down a bit before I add a DVD burner.
I'm thinking of making it a multiboot setup with linux/win2k or perhaps use Virtual PC or VMware. Maybe just set it up Linux and use a Windows emulator of some flavor. I'll have to have win2k on it for work purposes. Remote administration is now my joyfull task within the company.
I'm open to any suggestions on setting up my new toy. As long as I can still play some of my favorite games. Civilisation for example. Oooh, I just thought, I now have enough power to play Black and White. Yippee!

Oh man.
Nice system, but... bin that video card.
Get a GeForce4 Ti4600 or a Radeon 9700, ASAP.

Just to be sure..
Those cards are supported by X in current distributions? I am in the market for a new card and while I have to use win2k for work, I really like not using it when I don't have to... Any caveats on either card that you know of? Do I have to upgrade the power supply to use them or upgrade the air conditioning?
Thanks, Hugh

Yadda yadda... how much did it set you back??
:-)
I've had very good luck with VMWare and Win4Lin. Win4Lin is Windows 9X only, however.

Coworker.
She has a few suppliers she deals with regularly and gets a decent discount because of that. I'll ask her if it's ok to give out her email addy.

mobo and RAM manufacturer/model?
I'm looking at about $800 for:
Soyo Dragon Ultra AMD 2100 + TaiSol fan (probably) 512M Corsair DDR2700 CAS2/heatsink 80G WD800JB Gainward GeForce 4200 Lite-on 16x DVD drive and 52/24/52 CD/RW/R drive SoundBlaster Audigy floopy, case, etc.
The mobo/cpu/fan/memory is a combo ($379) from [link|http://www.monarchcomputing.com|http://www.monarchcomputing.com] - they give you a 3-year warranty on the combo for an extra $25, and it's tested for compatibility.
How much did you pay for the CPU? 2800s are pretty expensive still...

K7S5A Pro mobo
I let her pick it. Details [link|http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/pd_spec.asp?product_id=269|here]. I don't know about the RAM. I trust her to get decent stuff. The only manufacturer I insisted on was Plextor. Even though she says she has found a rebranded source for Plextors about 20% cheaper. When she dropped off the system she forgot to bring all the paperwork, I'll get that tomorrow.

I know
A couple people seemed all agoggle at the system and I wondered why. Didn't seem all that special to me, just somewhat below cutting edge to get a good bang for the buck.
Anyone still interested in buying one of these now that the true components have been identified? I don't think it's all that special a deal for the parts used.
