Propaganda and packaging.
Most of the people in the country (90%+) will never have heard of whomever it will be so they won't have any opinion (other than the "Democrats are Evil" or "the Left is Evil").
It's all about selling to the public.

I remember when the 1st Bush ran for prez
against Dukakis... everyone decided to hate Dukakis because he was a "card carrying member of the ACLU." And that was the litany of hate for that campaign...
Why, just one administration earlier, the ACLU was defending OLIVER NORTH, AMERICAN HERO. But, you know, ideas like that don't squeeze into sound bytes very well.
