Getting my taxes done today.
Going to H&R Block, because I've never been able to do our taxes correctly by myself, and our taxes are going to be MESSED UP this time around:
- I was unemployed for most of last year, and in order to make mortgage payments I had to elect to NOT have taxes taken out of the unemployment checks
- I had to sell a fair amount of stock last year to make ends meet as well
- My wife is an ordained minister and the hospital she was working last year at payed her in some screwy manner that I don't quite understand
So think kind thoughts for the poor schlub who has to figure out all this stuff this year...

H&R Block
I am not sure that H&R Block is the best place to go. The people there are not trained accountants, they are part-time people who have taken an H&R tax prep course. They can probably do the simple stuff for you, but I wouldn't count on them for a complicated return. If you have a complicated return you should probably go to an accountant who does this stuff for a living.

The nice thing about H&R
is that for an extra 26$, you can buy a guarantee that if they screw up your taxes, they'll have to deal with the IRS. :)
As far as taxes went this year, it wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it would be. Fortunately, while much of our income was not taxed (due to my unemployment), we didn't make nearly as much as we did last year, so the interest we were paying on our mortgage was a sizable enough deduction to make what we owe manageable.

Fine Print (a.k.a. EULA)
Not for H&R, but for the on-line tax programs. I read a couple of them and found (paraphrased) "If we made a mistake that cost you money, penalties or fines, we will be liable for an amount not to exceed the amount paid by you for our services".
After that I went back to my usual TurboTax (not the on-line version). Taxes filed on Saturday.

Don't know
I used the CD/downloaded version. At least I was able to print and review my forms before sending them.
Also, I've used TurboTax since Version 2 or 3, so I'm very comfortable with it. YMMV.

My point being:
There's no more protection in using a CD-based version than the online versions...

Even TurboTax has this option
--
We have only 2 things to worry about: That things will never get back to normal, and that they already have.

Re: H&R Block
H&R Block is where my wife and I went to get our taxes done. They have a C++ written program for Windows that does all the complicated stuff for them. All they do is enter the data into electronic forms and the program figures it out for them.
Due to my being unemployed in 2002, and working part of the year only, we got into a lower tax bracket, and we got $4000USD back from the IRS and $500 back from Missouri. Missouri would have been higher, but the State does not take taxes out of State Unemployment benefit payments. That is enough to live off of until my disability checks start coming in June. Enough to make house payments and the food bills.

During the tax entry
the lady got an error, which reported it as *.CPP, line number XX, error XX. I assume that CPP stands for C++, it resumed after that error. I imagine that the developers programmed it to say what file caused the error, and what line number and error type so that they could debug it better. Unless a different language also uses the CPP extension?

Nope, none other that I know of; that's C++ alright. Thanks.
