...get a backup program to work for the first time, when this is the first time you have ever used it and/or set it up?

a) A Bad Backup.
b) A Corrupt FileSystem.
c) A chance to recover from a .tgz stored on a different filesystem.
d) Another Bad Backup.
e) A stupid case of dyslexia, thereby overwriting your GOOD .tgz with a BAD one.
f) A machine that has a bad case of /var disease.
g) A job ahead of you fixing the problem you created.
h) a+b+c+d+e+f+g

Hint: it's the selection that covers a couple other selections.

New :-(
It sounds like a typical Friday to me - the day that disaster often strikes.

Best of luck with the recovery.

Cheers,
Scott.
New :-(
There was a study that said 40% of weekday computer disasters struck on Mondays and Fridays...

:-)
New Phew... I KNEW it...
Sometimes it seems like about 80% on Monday's and Friday's for Weekday problems.

But, I see that the same people ran another study... It was on Weekend Problems.

It was found: Weekend Problems, ALWAYS occur on Saturday or Sunday only.

New Fun with stats...
--

We have only 2 things to worry about: That
things will never get back to normal, and that they already have.
New If you Googled your web pages
you might be able to pull out the HTML and picture files from the Google Cache, which might help to rebuild part of your web site. True you won't get the CGI scripts, config files, and other important stuff, but at least you could rebuild your system to the point of having some of the web files put back up.

New Nah... not worth it.
I only had COMPLETELY re-creatable stuff there, besides the Debian "starter page"... and a DB, that is gonna get replaced anyway!

Looks like I should create a file system JUST for plodding this out on Monday!

Now, I just need to get a few tips for a good way to re-create my DPKG database of what has been installed.

ANy Idea-ers? Rick, Peter, Karsten? Anyone else I should talk to...

I pretty much a have a list of what's installed... just the details of what is there. / (root) is safe, as is /home and /usr and /usr/local. Just /var is toast.

GAH... I'm SOOO bad!!!

New What did you toast? What are you trying to recover?

Recovery modes depend on what you're trying to recover, and what\r\nyou've got to work with.

\r\n\r\n

If you've toasted /var, you've got a lot cut out for you. There's\r\npartial system recovery possible, and I've been working with Osamu Aoki\r\n(a Debian developer) at scripting a recovery procedure based on [link|http://www.linuxworld.com/2003/0113.petreley.html|Nick Petreley's\r\narticle on the subject]. Unfortunately, the current status is that\r\ndebconf remains hosed.

\r\n\r\n

It may be cleaner at this point to reinstall if you've wiped out\r\nsufficiently large portions of the system. You're likely going to have\r\ninconsistencies even if you do get most of the apt database rebuilt,\r\nthough these may not be major. It is possible to get a pretty\r\ngood conformance between files actually installed on the system and\r\nDebian packages by way of such utilities as apt-file.

\r\n\r\n

Best bet is redundant off-site backups. Any locally managed\r\npartitions, /etc, and large portions of /var are necessary to recover a\r\nsystem from hardware or operator failure.

New Machine still boots...
But /var is indeed TOAST... All I need to get is the debconf DB and such somewhat sync'd...

I was thinking about installing everything I had installed on a Mirror system and then backing up /var then restoring that one...

I am thinking it is far better to try that... before a re-install...

GAH... I STILL can't believe I did that...

MAN!

Btw, I will be commenting further on this... We shall see how it worky...

BTW, I am getting a DEC 2100 Sable Alpha processor... 233MHz. A DEC 1000 233MHz also.. in a couple of week for fun.

That article was very good. I am still oging to try good ole hard-work at first.

New You learn from your mistakes
don't worry about it, I mess up sometimes too. I cannot even get Linux installed without a media error or a crash in the video setup. I am suspecting bad hardware at this point. I might have to buy a used $212USD Dell system to run Linux on and see if that works better.

New what os? Linux I assume
I always create on a machine I care about a /dskchg partition to copy meaningful things I might need to recover a horked disk. Doesnt cure the problem but gives a list of non vanilla changes to the system.
