New Er wrong.. clear coats: H2O + grime = acids; pinholes, rust
People who drive fancy cars in snow + salt areas DO go to self-carwashes and clean underside. How often == how picky. The smart/rich ones just use a beater in the winter and keep other one in unheated garage till spring.

New have a 1990 van that I bought in 1994
washed it in 1994 once heavy wax, never washed it since, brought it to FL in 2000 still not washed still no rust.
