New US Terror Alert Levels Raised to Orange

Whatever that means. I recall the SF Ferries being pretty full when they suggested the bridges were at risk of being targets. Nothing happened.

I think that it's extraordinarily important that we in computer science keep fun in computing. When it started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the paying customer got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their complaints seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for the successful, error-free perfect use of these machines. I don't think we are. I think we're responsible for stretching them, setting them off in new directions, and keeping fun in the house. I hope the field of computer science never loses its sense of fun. Above all, I hope we don't become missionaries. Don't feel as if you're Bible salesmen. The world has too many of those already. What you know about computing other people will learn. Don't feel as if the key to successful computing is only in your hands. What's in your hands, I think and hope, is intelligence: the ability to see the machine as more than when you were first led up to it, that you can make it more.

New Oranges are a good source of vitamin C.
It means that you should be more careful than you were before...

But not as careful as you could possibly be.
New What it really means.
Ashcroft 'n cronies want a lot of [link|http://publicintegrity.org/dtaweb/report.asp?ReportID=502&L1=10&L2=10&L3=0&L4=0&L5=0|new powers], (as I previously reported in Politics, BEFORE /. picked it up...) so they ratchet up the threat level to remind everybody that we're in the middle of a war, and hey, civil liberties are inconvenient...

Thus, engaging in the lawful activities of a group designated as a "terrorist organization" by the Attorney General could be presumptive grounds for expatriation.

The police state is awake. It's still sleepy, just beginning to flex its fingers, but once it's at full alertness we will never see it slumber again in our lifetimes.

New Are you now or have you ever been a member of.. cha cha cha
New No I haven't
I wouldn't join a group who would have me as a member. :) Groucho Marx there, not Karl. :)

New and improved, Chicken Delvits!]
New Re: The new powers
The leaked PDF file is a hasty scan rather than the original document with information intact, and takes an eternity (apparently the server connects to the outside world through a Flav-R-Straw) to download. Still, I hope to have a full copy for review and distribution tomorrow. Time permitting, I may attempt to feed it to some OCR software--assuming there's something out there that can process scanned PDF.

cordially,
"Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist."
New Exactomundo!
Ever notice how a new, higher level of "alert status" is called for when the "Administration" wants to do something dodgy (or when the Resident's popularity or trust factor begins to wane)?

I have....

Hence, Whatever the color-du-jour is, the only things you need to really more vigilant about are a) your wallet/pocketbook, and b) your rights.

(But it's true...you do need to be more vigilant as the color goes up!!!)
