Even if you're in ROTC, you can still be drafted. Only two ways to not be drafted as an infantryman. Medical exemption or volunteering for the Air Force or Navy or Marines (or Army and choosing your MOS). "Conscientious objectors" will have to find their own way.

Then 6 months before he was due to get out, he was in a motorcycle accident. He reenlisted for the full term because that would cover medical bills, they were willing to put him through college, and before he could possibly go to Vietnam he had a US tour first. There was no way that Vietnam would still be going on..he thought. He has a medal from Vietnam. Must confess too that I only got to matriculate because the military gave me every opportunity & every bit of support I could have dreamed of. They even allowed me to take a years leave of absence to do an intensive at acivillian tech institute that ultimately got me into officers training scholl & air defence role. But I am very grateful I never went to Nam as it would have been to traumatic for the likes of me to witness civvies being 'wasted' & unpopular officers being fragged (a not uncommon practice towards the end of the war), while grunts spent their spare time sucking on weed sticks while listening to rhe 'psychadelic music' of the time.
