New I have a brother who did something like that
He signed up a few days before his 18'th birthday for a 3 year term of service. Then 6 months before he was due to get out, he was in a motorcycle accident. He reenlisted for the full term because that would cover medical bills, they were willing to put him through college, and before he could possibly go to Vietnam he had a US tour first. There was no way that Vietnam would still be going on..he thought.

He has a medal from Vietnam.
