Welcome to IWETHEY!

New "deferments".
My student deferment expired when the U decided that I wasn't qualified to attend. The Army called (1972). Instead of being drafted (#32), I enlisted. Went to Germany instead of Nam. Spent 21 years in service (11 active, 10 reserve) and "retired" as MSG (can't retire as 1SG).

I'd support the draft. But with only one deferment. Medical. If you're not physically fit, then you don't have to serve in the active service. Any other deferment is subject to abuse.

No job deferment.
No student deferment.
No family deferment.
No CO deferment.

Just my (as someone else here always adds) $.02

New Ditto.
And additional. Even if you've "volunteered" for the Reserves (see Bush), you can still be drafted. Even if you're in ROTC, you can still be drafted.

Only two ways to not be drafted as an infantryman.

Medical exemption or volunteering for the Air Force or Navy or Marines (or Army and choosing your MOS).

"Conscientious objectors" will have to find their own way.
New Conscientious objectors
will be carry either a medical kit or commo gear instead of a rifle.

New I must admit I avoided the draft - by signing up regular ...

we used to tease the draftees <grin>

Doug
New I have a brother who did something like that
He signed up a few days before his 18'th birthday for a 3 year term of service. Then 6 months before he was due to get out, he was in a motorcycle accident. He reenlisted for the full term because that would cover medical bills, they were willing to put him through college, and before he could possibly go to Vietnam he had a US tour first. There was no way that Vietnam would still be going on..he thought.

He has a medal from Vietnam.

Cheers,
Ben

New Education opportunities in military are there for

those that grab them. Must confess too that I only got to matriculate because the military gave me every opportunity & every bit of support I could have dreamed of. They even allowed me to take a years leave of absence to do an intensive at acivillian tech institute that ultimately got me into officers training scholl & air defence role.

But I am very grateful I never went to Nam as it would have been to traumatic for the likes of me to witness civvies being 'wasted' & unpopular officers being fragged (a not uncommon practice towards the end of the war), while grunts spent their spare time sucking on weed sticks while listening to rhe 'psychadelic music' of the time.

Cheers

Doug
