Many problems last weekend.
I upgraded two ancient boxes from Red Hat 6.x to Debian. I used the boot CD and 24bf (bf24?)
I couldn't get the Intel EtherExpressPro 100 cards to work. I kept getting DMA errors from the Promise PCI IDE interface, APIC dummy errors, etc......
But if I installed 2.2, everything worked fine.
So, I yanked the hard drive from one of the servers-to-be-upgraded and put it in a new box and did the 2.4 install on all new hardware. It worked perfectly.
Then I built my own 2.4.20 kernel (kernel-package rox!) an took out all the cool new features.
I installed my custom kernel and put the hard drive into the old box and it worked perfectly.
I did the 2.4 install on the other box and copied the kernel package over to that one (via CD) and now that one works perfectly, also.
Ancient hardware: Tyan Tomcat IV motherboard. Promise PCI IDE controller (33). Intel EtherExpressPro 100 cards from 5 years ago.

My floppies sux0r.
One of the machines doesn't even have a floppy drive anymore. The floppies I had laying around (how many years old are these? they're covered in dust!) kept giving me errors when I tried to dd the image to them.
le *sigh*
Even at work, we don't have any new floppies.

I used the miniCD distros
There were four linked off the Debian page. I used the one marked "boot-bf2.4-with-basedebs".
No boot floopies needed. :-)

I need an easy way to replace the kernel in those.
Yep, those are awesome. But I don't know how to swap their stock kernel with my custom kernel.
Other than install everything then toss in the next CD with the custom kernel.
Well, they're re-usable, re-writable CD's so it isn't a problem with wasting CD's. I'd just like to stream-line the process a bit more.
I'm checking into jigdo to see if that's an option.

Boyoboy!
I'll try it if ISAPNP advice doesn't work...
Lotsa work, though. Leanig more toward more HW replacement, though.

Re: Boyoboy!
I would avoid isapnp - archaic. If you have ISA devices, configure them manually.

It's not so much the ISAPNP...
but if you DO setup the hardware period without ISAPNP. ISPNP also reads the conf for setting the kernel params for the module.

I am morally opposed to trashing working tech.
A man is never so tall as when he stoops to help a small computer.
It has a processor rated for 233 MILLION cycles per SECOND!
It has a network card that can push 100 MILLION bits per SECOND!
No way can this be useless. It's got more processing POWER than NASA had when they put a man on the moon!
