How often do legit new users sign on? My impression is not at all often. If its seldom enough for you to handle, perhaps you could implement an approval process - basically you put new user apps into a queue and when you get a second you click all the check boxes and make em real. I guess this is like probation.
Other idea - provide reader-side filters (you know - kill files). Maybe kill files don't hide messages - maybe they only autolock em on a per user basis (looks locked to the reader). This more helps us manage our own impulses.
I'd definitely turn off all but orion - its getting hard to keep track of all the new ids. Scott Hacker (probably because we've got at least 2 scotts) threw me until I read the content and the owners voice came through loud and clear.
